Can an 85-88 Maxima (fwd) rear calipers and an 82-83 280zx rotors use the 80-84 810 Maxima brackets with the floating dust shield?

No. The offset (which I define as the distance between the centerline of where the rotor is to the caliper mounting surface) of the 1985-88 Maxima rear caliper is different than the 280ZX, 200SX or the 240SX (or even the 1981-84 Maxima) rear calipers. Hence, to use the 1985-88 Maxima caliper requires the Motorsport Auto bracket which is different (in terms of offset) than the 1982-83 Maxima rear caliper bracket.

There is no such thing as a single “1980-84" Maxima bracket. There was an 1981 bracket (which you can use with the 1979-81 280ZX rear caliper) and a 1982-83 bracket (which you use with the 1982-83 280ZX rear caliper). The 1984 Maxima rear brackets were welded on. BTW, the 1985-88 Maxima rear bracket is flat and requires modifications (welding and re-drilling) to use.

Help! I thought I done my homework. I bought new 1981 Maxima rear Caliper brackets, 1981 280zx rotors and 1981 280zx calipers and hangers. I had the rear axle was off so I didn't need to cut the mounting bracket, fits fine. The 1981 280zx calipers do NOT fit my brackets. I read about 15 post that said they would? Thanks for the info, Kevin

This is my rear brakes set-up I hope any of you can find an answer here

here's a pic showing the difference between the 81-84 and 85-88 maxima brackets

(click pics)

In the beginning I also brought a set of the '83 280zx calipers, but they didn't fit. I went back to the 82 maxima and took the calipers as well, apparently the '79-80 280zx have the same calipers with the small pads, but I'm not sure, but apparently in many stores they have the same part number (do your own research) at the end I used a set of '82 maxima rear brake brackets and calipers and a set of '80 280zx rear brake discs

installing the hand brake

you will need to remove the stock maxima cable bracket and weld the one of your s30

What is the part number of the Maxima bracket you are trying to use? It should be 44155-N3202. The "early" (1979-81) 280ZX caliper will bolt up to it. Use the early rotor as well.

For more info see:

http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=126031

The 44155-04S10 Maxima caliper requires use of the "late" (1982-83) 280ZX caliper and rotor.

Megatherion, can you post more of those pictures? I'm trying to figure out what exactly I have so I can order some rebuild kits.

No problem,

th_IMG_2807.jpg

th_IMG_2809.jpg

now for the hand brake you will need to remove the original clip bracket from the calipers

th_IMG_2810.jpg

and then weld the stock one from your Z as you can see in the other post, also you will need to cut and weld the brake steel bar for about 1" I dont exactly remember, but when you finish to install the cables to the calipers you will see how much you can cut out, because the brake cables will be a little bit longer

this is the part that I'm talking about

Hm so that little square/box you put right in the middle is because of too much cable or to lengthen the cable to reach the calipers? Perhaps I should just use a hiem joint so you can screw it in and out to adjust the length. Just need proper threads.

Hopefully I can pull the bleed nipples off my old front 240 calipers and put them on these rear brakes (hopefully they will thread in and fit), unless the rebuild kit comes with more. Mine don't even look like a they have the hex around them to fit a wrench on!

I'm hoping zcarnut is still around and can elaborate on the following statement he made:

There is no such thing as a single “1980-84" Maxima bracket. There was an 1981 bracket (which you can use with the 1979-81 280ZX rear caliper) and a 1982-83 bracket (which you use with the 1982-83 280ZX rear caliper). The 1984 Maxima rear brackets were welded on.

My question is the welded '84 bracket the same as the '82-83 bracket (pn 44155-04S10) or is it just a waste of time trying to use the '84 bracket. I'd like to do the same conversion as zcarnut posted in the sticky with 200SX calipers and 280zx rotors using the 44155-04S10 bracket or is there another combination that must be used with the'84 welded bracket?

Thanks for all your help.

Scott
