2+2 Vacuum Booster Upgrade with Spacer

I just put on a new (79-81) 2+2 Vacuum booster and (77)brake master cylinder. I had this same set up before, but I just replaced everything with new parts.

The problem I'm having is my old setup didn't use a metal ~1" spacer between the booster and firewall. When I bleed the brakes without the spacer the stroke seems to long and you can feel plunger rod pop out of the tunnel and the pedal slams to the floor.

If I add the spacer then I lose about 3" of brake pedal travel but the plunger doesn't pop out.

Should I just remove the spacer and hope that enough bleeding will solve the problem?

Has anyone had experience with this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Steve,

I'm taking the spacer out tonight and bench bleeding the brake cylinder. Thanks again for the input.
