S13 Redtop vs. S13 Blacktop

Recommended Posts

What are the actual diffrences between these 2 motors. Some people say the blacktop has more power/torque, but same places say its the same. I have also recently heard that the blacktop has forged pistons, but I don't remember seeing too much about this. A simple google search shows that the main benifit is the fact that its a new engine, and would therefor have less miles, and not too much else. I tried searching some of the 240sx forums, and its a bunch of kids fighting and flaming others, and becomes hard to tell if the info is correct. What is the actual diffrences? I know theres a few people on here that do alot of SR swaps, and Vildini comes to mind, would you happen to know?

the only difference honestly is the fact that it is a newer motor and would imply that it has less mileage.

The s13 blacktops also come with finned heads towards the front of the valve cover, but i hav e also seen some of the redtops come like this as well.

second to that, they just change the valve cover because the red looks better. Ussually people abused the black top more, because the came in newer s13 and they were used for drifting, but not a very actual fact.

try to get auto block, the TPS needs to be from a 5-speed block and there you have it, a less abuse engine, less red-lining...

the port design on one has been mentioned to be different, aside from the fins on the front portion of the head, which some of BOTH engines had, depending on what year you grabbed it from.

s13 180sx's had red tops that replaced the CA18. they were from 91-93.

s13 silvias had red tops that replaced the CA18. they were from 91-94

s13 180sx's then came out with the black top in 94-98.

s13 silvia's came with both red and black tops (very late model) in 94, the s13 silvia's last year of production.

s14 silvias had s14 black tops from 95, up until the s15 came out, then it was replaced with the s15 blacktop.

s13 180sx had s13 blacktops alongside all s14 silvias (s14 zenki and s14 kouki)

therefore, you will find much fresher s13 180sx engines in some cases, if they're blacktops.

the difference between the high port heads is that the port, by design, was further away from the block deck surface (higher if looked at from the side, and down into the port) than the low port heads, which had the ports cast at a less steep angle, and made the intake path more obtrusive.

the high ports have a more direct shot into the cylinders, whereas the low port have more a restriction, being it is a tighter arc within the casting, apparently.

maybe an SR specialist can tell you what to look for when purchasing though.

this is off the top of my head from back when i was on 240sxforums in about 1998, i think my account is still there, imma check :D

EDIT: 1600 posts, and still loggin in, years later :D

but hes asking about both s13 engines not between the s14 and s15 blacktops compared to the s13 motors.

Both s13 sr20dets were high port since they dont have the VTC.

i know what he was asking, i was just told that there was a variance, even in the s13 models, which had nothing to do with the S14/S15 cam timing control.

=/

wrong info i guess.

but the roll-out info i listed should be correct.

i can't remember exactly where i read it, it may have been on here but there was a forum out there somewhere, where a guy was modifying the sr20ve head to work on the sr20det block

NEO VVL ? If so why not just use an SR20VET engine from an X-trail GT

S14 -S15 SR's are allready VTC (also known as NVCT) ...

its on here, well, and on sr20forum, where another guy is attempting the same swap but in a 240sx... its me.you'll need to have access to a tig, a machine shop, and will need to do some kind of distributorless ign. running the oil line for the cam activation is the easiest part of it. fnding a good rwd shortblock was the biggest problem...i literally tried 5 times to find a good one...and ended up sleeving one with a bad cylinder wall once i couldn't.

and why not use a sr20vet from an xtrail? well, you'd have to do the same mods for rwd application anyways... they're harder to find, and way more expensive. you'd get a cast turbo exhaust manifold that can sit on a shelf in your garage once you get a custom tubular one. on the other hand the valve cover is cool...like a 20v's , and has individual coils...which you may or may not be able to use with whatever ems you choose.

ok now.. y not a 1999 black top?

Trust exhaust system, boost controller at 1.0 bar+ some overboost and we have a 300bhp motor with a bunch of torq. We had that on a friends s15. never had a problem. oh intake was apexi but that wont' make much difference in performance.

OR WTF??? buy the new VQ38 Twin turbo ;)

I have found it..

it's only listed on the japanese catalogue since in Cyprus we only import directly from japan.

this is the picture trustexhaustxs3.th.jpg

and this is the link to the catalogue of the japanese page..

www.trust-power.com/spec_swf/01exhaust/Muffler_nissan.swf

the one with price Y130,000 says for S14 but this is it. I think the 80 is the mm. 3" is 76mm but this is how they state them

CORRECTION.. 1st one on the second page of the link

I was talking about my car's chassis. SR20det is not supposed to be on the S30 chassis. (not sure thought) Maybe that's why it's dificult to find it.

why not make a custom one based on that?

because making the downpipes are not the hard part, it would be trying to get the piping to squirm underneath the s30 chassis in a fitting manner that would be the challenge.

If you're going to modify an exhaust made for another car completely, you might as well start from scratch and buy an HKS Muffler or something.

Atleast that's what I think.
