What to do with stock LS1 heads?

Recommended Posts

I picked up a set of ls1 heads with 30k miles on them- for free!!! I still dont have a block though... I plan on building a 500+ hp ls1, 240z. This is my 2nd v8z project. What should I do with these heads?- should I port, polish, plane the deck, add roller rockers, valve springs?????? And can I do any of that at home? I have heard of people porting and polishing at home but i dont know the process or if im gonna screw them up. (im very mechanicaly inclined) I still have to decide if i have to boost the car or not to get these hp numbers. I have no exp. with ls1 heads. How much hp are these heads capable of? Any suggestions would help. Thanks:burnout:

what casting are they?

I'd decide what cam you are planning to run, and also if you are going FI as those two things are the biggest factors in what is 'needed' to be done to the heads. From my recent reading on ls1tech.com (go there, LOTS of info) rockers aren't really utilized all that much other than stock. Rollers can reduce some valvetrain stress/wear but to each their own.

500rwhp can be done NA for sure with a nice cam/head/intake/LT combo. There are guys running small cams (224/224 .567I .567E or smaller) and putting down 400+ hp... 500 is 'almost' a walk in the park with a bigger cam and nice heads.

Here is some light reading from one of the stickies on ls1tech.com

The site I linked posts all their flow numbers. They have numbers for their LS6 packages also. Plus Trick flow, AFR, and eventually L92 heads.

All I know is I have a dyno book where they took an LS2 motor (which have the LS6 heads), sent the heads to TEA and added a cam to get 572 HP. People on LS1tech.com talk highly of them too.
