Sounds good to me!

 

I would have much rather bought a ready and balanced assembly but this engine build didn't end up playing out that way. It would have been cheaper and easier. You're right.

 

Compression Ratio according to an online calculator I found is 10.24:1 based on a zero deck height.

I have a quick question for you, on my 385 sbc I am running a set of fabricated aluminum valve covers. The covers have a non baffled breather on one side and a non baffled pcv valve on the other.

 

The pcv valve is sucking oil and spitting it in the intake causing a smokey mess. I was entertaining running two breathers and deleting the pcv valve all together. Do you see any problem doing this?

 

My other option is to get a set of fabricated valve covers with baffles built in them.

Let me bounce my setup off you and tell me what you think. Looking to build a not to crazy or expensive SBC for street use, once in awhile at the track and autocross. Looking for smooth idle with a little lope and will run accessories with no problem. Heres my setup.

 

350 4 bolt main block .060 over

Stock crank and rods

Speed pro hyper flat top pistons

268 adv duration hyd. flat tappet cam

9.0to1 or 9.5to1 comp ratio depending on 64cc or 67cc heads

Roller rockers

vortec heads with high lift cam mods.

edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake

600-650 cfm carb

camaro 5 or 6 speed and 3.90 rear end

 

What do you think?

SBC 383 stroker using a Victor Jr. intake, Holley mechanical 750 double pumper, isky hydraulic roller cam and Dart 205 aluminum (Conquest) heads, along with 6 inch rods, forged wiesco pistons, at about a 10.5:1 compression ratio...

 

On the carb, what should I start with on the jetting, and also cams/squirters or other recommendations on running in the carb properly... This will be a track day road course car. Also running a carter helper pump from the fuel cell out to a surge canister, then onto a Mallory pump to a return style regulator with vaccum port.

no problem running no pvc and multi breathers but you can run...a connector/breather tube and connect the PVC mid span, and with a bit of fabrication youll cure the problem

as long as you realize that the vortec heads require a differant intake,rockers,valve covers, etc. and that theres two differant types of vortec heads, the 170cc small port and the much better,for major hp builds, 215cc large port versions,(but the large port versions are not well matched to that particular combo, while the small port versions are a good match) and make the apropreate mods your looking at a decent combo

I usually start at what ever point, (jets/power valves )the carb came with and let the plugs and a/f ratio and an IR temp gun on the headers tell me the necessary changes, if I had to guess Id start with 70 jets and 5.5 pvs front and rear, fuel pressure at 5 psi and set the floats to the bottom of the inspection ports and go from there!

 

read thru this stuff below while keeping in mind the basic goal is a 13.5-14.5:1 mid rpm cruise a/f ratio and about that same ratio at idle, with about 12.8:1-13.5:1 at wide open throttle, a vacuum gauge and a fuel pressure gauge,(I like to try for 5.0- 5.5 psi on the FP regulator) having your floats set correctly(just damp lower sight hole threads) and your ignition timing correct (all in at about 3200rpm at about 36-38 degrees total advance)and about 6-10 degrees BTDC at 900rpm idle)are mandatory

What mods are you talking about? I know about the different things needed for vortec heads but will stock steel center bolts valve covers fit with roller rockers? If I get the vortec heads modified for guide plates then I dont need to run self aligning "vortec" rockers correct? Its good to know my planning is headed in the right direction.

 

Heres the to heads I'm considering. They all ready have the threaded studs, guide plates and high lift mod.

your aware that vortec heads normally require self aligning rockers and don,t use pushrod guide plates and NARROW body rockers

I know about the self aligning thing but noticed that there are vortec heads available with guide plates.

 

But I read one of the articles you sent and liked their setup. They used vortec heads with self aligning roller tip rockers with stock valve covers. That answers my question.

 

But now I have a new one. What rocker ratio 1.5 or 1.6?

theres times when the 1.6:1 ratio gives no improvements and times when theres noticable gains from the slight increase in lift, but theres rarely if ever any advantage to useing the 1.5:1 ratio over the 1.6:1 ratio if clearances allow the higher lift except if you insist on getting into or near valve float rpms where the 1.5:1 ratio tends to be a tiny bit less likely to float valves

OK, here's one: what causes BROWN smoke (I mean, like chocolate) from the exhaust? Happens at idle, but especially when blipping the throttle. Not blue, not white, not gray, but brown. This is on a very low-mileage motor that has been sitting for a long time (big block with a carb).

 

Hint... animals may have been nesting in my exhaust system over the years.

I have a "77 280Z we put a 350 in and are having trouble figuring out the wiring of the wiper motor. I have numerous diagrams but none tell me what color wire does what function for the motor, intermittent amp and so forth. I am using a Painless 18 circuit wiring harness #10202. Some of my frustrations are with the fact that the wire colors going into the 6 pin round plug (male end) from the wiper motor are different in color than the wires in the corresponding (female end) plug. Any help or direction you can supply me will be greatly appreciated.

Grumpy, I just came back from a MonsterJam. It was a lot more fun then I thought it would be. The amount of energie spent in one afternoon is just awesome. :) The monstertrucks are obviously supercharged v8's but do you have any idea how big these engines are and what kind of fuel delivery system they use? Compression ratio? Power output? type of fuel? I am guessing alcohol or something similar because the fumes where not that eye watering. All in all pretty impresive machines.

I am looking for a electric 12Volt vacuum pump to use on our brake booster,since we changed to alky. I know I should just install a wildwood master cly but a friend told me about using the electric pump. He told me to check a 93 Camaro or ford truck with a 7.3 diesel. But I have not had any luck finding one. Do you have any Ideas.Thanks for any help,Jerry
