Electric Power Steering

A quick question from the NON specialist.

 

As I understand the steering in a Z is heavy/hard to manipulate quickly due to the angles of the suspension/steering components. Correct?

 

Would having power steering in the Z without fixing the cause of the heavy steering put extra stress on the suspension/steering components?

 

Would the benefit out way the requirement to check the components more often?

I wonder how much resistance the electric version has when not powered.

It is my understanding none - as how these units work is EPAS would be the correct term - Electric Power Assist Steering. The rack is the standard zed rack - no changes there. Then the EPAS unit has a ECU that get the vehicle speed and also uses a torque sensor in the column so using these two references the ECU tells the motor how much assistance to apply and thus making the steering feel lighter for the given inputs. The good thing about this setup is when the vehicle is at high speed the unit does not apply any assistance so you have the feel of the normal zed :D

 

I will know more once I get my kit installed and up and running but incase it does not work as planned ie it is too light I have a PWM circuit I will build to alter the vehicle speed signal so I get the feedback I require.

 

Re the question about extra stress on suspension etc - well it will be there with or with out PS you can get the same results if your have good strong arms and can turn the wheel fast enough with enough torque - so I might not install my EPAS and just visit the gym more :)

Not a problem - Due to my suspension mods that I have done I am expecting much heavier steering and as I want to do well in auto-x I think having PS will help a lot. In my case yes I will have to check things more often vs standard suspension setup but then I would not have the good turn-in or handling somethings have to go to make way for performance.

Brian jut got my electric power steering unit from you this past Friday. This is going to really take the power steering by Armstrong out of this car.

 

I have been working on this car a nice sporty cruz'er and this will go a long way in achiving my goals.

 

It has been great working with you on this project. I really appreciate all the work you did getting this unit for me. And, having the Japanese instructions tranlated.

 

Hopefully I will get it installed soon and send some pic's your way to show all that was done.

 

This will make a driveable enjoyable car even more so.

Brian was nice enough to find me a kit, but I am unsure if I should go with that kit or this one here:

The price difference is a little and the kit from Brian will most likely be cheaper to install and get up and running.

 

This kit is in the US and costs about the same money except I will have to fit it and maybe deal with a few more other issues like that.

I just think having something local with replacement parts might be the way to go for a long term fix.

Any advice or opinion are extremely needed and desired.

The only question I can think of is does that Unisteer unit have a variable effort control? It looks like its designed to be bolted to the firewall in the engine bay which is a plus, if there is spce for it to fit of course.

Today I picked up my '76 280Z 2+2 from the shop with my new electric power steering installed. Wow, does it make a difference on how the car handles. I purchased this unit from Brian K. of zcarbum@aol.com fame. Thank you Brian your product it is a seriously very nice addition to my car.

The unit was installed by Dustin Rinehart of Peak Performance in Eugene, Oregon. All work was extremely well done with a very nice custom application. No wires are showing, in fact I don't think anyone would notice the car even had power steering unless they got behind the wheel and drove it.

I have driven it very little presently as the rain is still coming down and I have a lot of clean to do after the car has sat for the last few months at Dustin's shop.

 

From the driving that I have done however, it is now a very manageable car. The feeling in the steering wheel is very solid and gives you confidence in the handling of the car. Now instead of using muscle by armstrong when trying to steer the car at a stop, it is a two finger job. Very easy, but not too easy to the touch. There is no noice associated at all with the opertation of the ps when in use.

 

I will be painting the bottom portion of the (motor) black just to hide it from the most discerning eye. Now on to my next project.
