For ease of tuning (V8s all my life), and it is on the cheaper side than Webers or some custom setup. I believe they used air injection, at least I think thats what it is, on the older 240s, for the SUs, would it do any harm to remove them from the exhaust manifold and weld them up? You're not required to get it checked but you are legally required to retain all OEM emissions equipment. I'm not saying you should/shouldn't keep it on. I'm just saying it will not hurt performance, but is technically illegal. Try digging around a bit here, it's been covered extensively.
