External wastegate adaptor

Hi,

 

I'm thinking of moving to a external waste-gate, but not wanting to weld a pipe into the manifold (Dont trust my welding for that), I was wondering has anyone used this type of adaptor to connect there waste gate into, also, does the outlet get in the way of any other things, like the inlet manifold, exhaust housing, etc.

I also went this route. I took mine to a cast iron specialist to have it welded. I would strongly recomend not using this for a S130, I had major steering shaft clearance issuse. I wish I had started off with cutting a hole in the mannifold and having just a wastegate flange and maybe some piping welded on instead of that adapter. Ask Phill, but I think they may not flow enough and might cause some boost creep. I will find this out in about a month after my engine is broken in. If you do stick with it, round the inside edge nice and smooth to get good flow to the exhaust gate.

mine cost me about $50, and another $70 to get it shipped to me here in Tassie,

 

as for the manifold been cast, from another post I asked this question, it steel I believe.

 

sound like I need to cut a hole into it..., or find a adaptor, with the hole (wastergate), at the bottom

Hi,

 

I've been doing some research on welding a pipe into the bottom of the manifold, and I keep reading about 'Schedule 40', so I've done some hunting on the 'net' and found that its made from "wrought steel and wrought iron",

so my question is, what 'type' will I need,

 

I assume it would be ""wrought steel", but I honestly don't know (out of my area of expertise)

 

so any input would be appreciated

Hi,

 

I've spent hours looking for these pipes all over the place (internet),

 

I just found out they are called "Buttweld", so if you do a seach for this on ebay, you'll find heaps of them. only in the US by the look.

 

I need to keep looking..

Well I am selling my manifold with my adapter welded to it if you want one for a good price. I'll let it go for $50 because it leaks from #1 and #2 and needs to be resurfaced. It also does not fit as well as I needed it in my ZX. They fit fine in the S30 though. PM me if you want it. I called my machine shop and they quoted me $55 to get it resurfaced.

Let me see if I can dig up some descent pictures. I posted the on here before. I pretty much just machined a flat spot on the manifold, hogged out a hole for the exhaust, drilled and tapped 2 holes for the bolts. Been running it like this for many years and never had a problem.

I just installed this adaptor on a customer's L28. Welded it onto the manifold, and welded on a V-band for a Tial 38mm Wastegate. All V-bands on the stainless downpipe made a very compact installation.

 

Turbo is a GT3076r, crazy fast spool.

 

Even with less than optimal angles for the exhaust dump into the wastegate, that 38mm valve should outfow any internal gate I've seen.

 

We got solid boost control from 12 -20psi with a Sard boost controller (after much guessing about how to make settings -Japanese Language Manual!), 12 pound spring in the wastegate. I would recommend this setup.

Very nice work man! I am getting pretty good venting also through my 38mm Turbonetics Evo gate on a 15lbs spring. I have yet to see over 15psi in a datalog. Unfortunatly I have to get rid of my manifold because of space restrictions in a ZX with the size turbo I'm using.

I may be interested in your manifold, but it wouldn't be till after xmas

These adapters may work fine in lower boost/HP motors, but they have their limits and may not work as well in higher boost/HP motors.

 

What is not desirable about these wastegate adapters is the 90 degree turn the exhaust gas has to make; especially as the speed of the exhaust increases, it becomes more and more difficult for the exhaust gas to make the turn. If you can manage it, a 45 degree angle or less is better.
