'75 tank in a '73: Benefits?

I've heard that the '75 had bigger lines coming in and out of it, and will fit right into a '73. Are either of these just nasty rumors, or would I actually see a benefit from this swap? I've been told that my '73's Fuel pickups just won't cut it when I start getting to my 400-500 rwhp goals.

AFAIK all North American 280Zs with EFI have baffled tanks, the issue would be the rear deck area, which varied from the early 280Z [75 and 76] to the late 280Z [77 and 78]

Went digging and found these:

Those threads say the early 280Z tank will fit into the 240Z.

Honestly though it might be a better idea to set up a surge tank and call it a day with your 240Z tank, might save you some money and a headache. I've never done one though.

Interesting...

I've looked inside my 240 tank and my 280 tank, and like I said, the only difference in baffling is a coke-can sized shroud around the pick-up. I can't comment on its effectiveness for N/A fuel injected applications. All I know is that with my high flow pump, any kind of hard left turn results in fuel starvation when the tank level drops below half.

The only extra baffling in the '75 - '76 280Z tank is a coke can sized shroud around the pickup. I have a '75 tank in my 240 and at anything below a 1/2 tank, my Walbro 255lph pump sucks air on hard left turns. I'd recommend having a sump welded to the bottom of your stock tank instead and run new pick-up and return lines. You can get the sump from summitracing.com for ~$60.

Hey! Somebody actually used the search function, found something I wrote, and quoted it. It's nice to know I don't post stuff here for nothing! :)

Badjuju, don't waste your time with the '75 tank. It's not worth it. While it does fit in the space, it's not a "bolt-in" swap, and you'll gain very little in the process. As flatblack280 said, go with a surge tank (probably best idea for your horsepower goals), or some of the other options that have been documented here. I've had good luck with the sump welded on the bottom of my tank, but I've only run it down to 3 gallons so far. At least it's far better than the 280 tank I had before.
