1987-4/87 Year Differences

Hey I've been searching around and couldn't find this information. I have an early 87' Z31 Turbo GLL. It's got a production date of later 86, but the owner's manual and the title label it as an 87. I'm being told that apparently the pre-4/87 Z31s didn't have the FS5R30A. I'm also being told that apparently the 4/87s and on besides having the LSD also had larger/heavier duty axles? As far as I thought all the 87's were the same except that 4/87 and on they gained the LSD and a slightly larger rear sway bar. Is there any info I'm missing? Also I'm trying to figure out if my tranny is a FS5R30A for sure or not. When I took it out to change the clutch, I had to remove the shifter by undoing a c-clip/crimp ring(whatever you call it) holding it in place. The rubber boot couldn't be removed from the shifter, plus it matches the pics of the FS5R30A as well as the mount on AZ-ZBum's site and it seems to follow the directions in the FSM. Were there any 87N model year cars that still had the T5? Were the tranny mounts for the T5 and FS5R30A any different? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks guys!

AS far as the transmission goes, this is what the shifter looks like on a T5

And in this pic it's a T5 on the left (note the 3 piece housing) and a Nissan V71C on the right (note the 2 piece housing)

It's pretty easy to tell a T5 apart from a Nissan trans.

I can't recall what the rear end differences were. I had an 87 before, but it saw NA so none of that applied to mine.

I do have a document detailing the engine differences if that's of any use to you.

Hope this helped a little.

I currently own a 4/87 build 87 turbo and a 10/86 build 87 turbo, also have owned 2 other 4/87 and 5/87 turbo's in the past.

All manual trans 1987 model year turbo's have the 30A trans. They all have the same sway bars and axles. 4/87 and later cars have the CLSD and the W series engine along with the T-3 turbo. 88 turbo's started using the T-25 turbo and the 88-89 turbo 30A trans had a taller 5th gear ratio.

What Tim said.

Everything from 9/86 up had the 30a. Only 3 slight changes made to the 30a over the last three model years.

You sir have a 30a. And a nice looking car. You should have made a trade with me instead of thinking about Steve's 260 :P

Please refresh my memory.

I have searched the archives and still have a question on the ECU Changes on Z31

Will an '85 ECU work on an '87 car ? Both are turbo cars with a 5 speed, without digital dash, and have original equipment

as far as AFM, and factory equipment sensors.

The ECU I am considering is an A18-636 654 which already has a JimWolf Tech upgrade for the injectors

Will I have to change any other components under the hood ? to use the earlier ECU.

I distinctly remember, the automatic ECU to be usable in a 5 speed car, although not preferred.

Is there any other ECU Changes to be concerned about? Regards, and Thank you
