  1. So here's what got accomplished today:

    1. Got the car running.

    2. Burned out the headlight switch. I'm pretty sure it's toast.

    3. Can't get it back running.

Seems like the headlight switch is what was giving me power to the ignition? Something doesn't seem right.

The car would not start unless I turned the headlight switch on. I'm so confused beyond belief. haha.

  2. Update: The car was running! yay. I replaced the neg battery cable. It's weird, I assume I have some wires matched up wrong. The combo switch seems to have to be on headlights in order for it start. no idea how that works.

But now it won't start again and the headlight combo switch is not clicking on and off. Broken combo switch now? It's okay, this is the first Z out of 4 that I've been able to cruise around in. At least for a few days.

  3. My buddy had same problem a few nights ago-new engine running great for two days, then dead in an instant! He figured wiring and checked everything-nothing loose. I went to his house and pulled a plug to check spark and the damn thing cranked! Put the plug wire back on and it has been running for 2 days. Gremlins.....

Thats funny because I just did spark plugs too, the other day... I'll give that a shot too.

Also, I'm now getting a click if I turn on my headlights on the combo switch and I can hear the starter attempting to spin.

Can't wait to freakin' get my EZ wiring harness so I can do this my way.

  4. I would say no on the alternator being the issue. Do the ignition lights work?. Do the headlights work?. You will need a volt meter if you can't get one, if not get a test light and start checking battery power at your fuses and fuse links. After that go to your ignition switch and check for power when the key is in the run and on position. Don't throw parts at.

Currently the headlights and tailights are wired on their own switches. I will bust out the test light and check out the ignition though.

  5. Exactly, not looking to throw any money at it yet, a lot of the maintenance was already done i.e voltage regulator.

I'm trying to troubleshoot in my head.

    1. When I try to jump the solenoid, the starter spins but doesn't attempt to kick over the motor. Even if the ignition switch was bad the motor should still turn over, no?

    2. The wiring looks the same as it did when it was running, nothing was changed, everything was cleaned etc.

    3. Could the battery/cables be the issue? Not giving the solenoid enough juice or not grounding out properly?

Thank you for the help! I've been searching to no avail, so if anyone has had this issue let me know!

  6. We got everything wired up and I was driving, seemed like I hit a bump and the car died and won't start again.

I have checked all the wire connections. Everything seems like it's where its supposed to be. I tried to jump the starter solenoid, possibly the ign switch was jacked up but it sounds like something is spinning but the motor isn't cranking or the starter is engaging. Also, when I used to put the key in the ign and turn to "ON" it would click, it no longer clicks.

This is on a '72 240z. Motor was running great for days before this.

    Thank you

  7. So after pretty much rewiring the entire harness, I have a lot of stuff working and a lot of stuff not working.

The headlights stay on all the time they do not turn off with the switch, or even when we pull the key out.

The parking lights do not come on.

Low beams, high beams, blinkers front and rear and hazard all works.

Only a few of the gauge lights work (I ordered all new bulbs). The gas gauge does not work or the reverse light.

We haven't wired the brake switch yet, could that cause problems with the tailights and other stuff?

I am so confused and lost at this point, nothing is missing, everything was cleaned. Also, the wiper fuse is blown could this cause a problem?

  8. So here it is, I had bought this car while I was in Afghanistan. We were getting ready to head home and they let us use the computer. So naturally it was craigslist hunting time. I forced my wife to go down and pick this up so I had a gift when I got home. I had just sold my '76 before I deployed because of the amount of effort / time / money it would have cost me. I don't have any of those.

    Some of the problems:

Jacked up wiring. Horrible. I acquired the help of my buddy at work who is good at wiring and he is redoing the entire harness for me.

    Suspension needs freshening.

    Door doesn't lock.

Primer / white mixed paint job.

    Crappy seats / door panels

    Good:

Ran and drove. Ran very smoothly, shifted nicely etc.

Came with an extra harness (Turned out to be just as bad as the first one)

    Minimal rust.

    Fresh tires

The idea of this car is just to have fun, I'm no restorer. I'm not even very mechanical. I have yet to work on this car sober, it's more of just a gathering for my friends to come over and drink and hangout.

This transformation happened in about 1 night, for a few hours until the liquor started coming out.

    When I first got it.

The color I went with is just the whole military theme. I have some 7.62 rounds that will be used on the car somewhere.

So thats all she wrote, currently getting rewired.

    Next project: Wheels & coilovers.

I put about maybe 50$ into it and had a good time. So the runs in the paint, missed paint spots, broken crap was all good because we had a good time!!

    Until next time!

  9. For fuel my setup is in the OP- Aeromotive A1000 with matching reg, all my AN ss braided lines and the 100 micron filter. All I really need is a fuel cell, rail and gauge.

EMS will be full standalone - debating AEM and MS3 mainly.

Glad to hear there's other love for the ka-t :D do u have a build thread?

Nice, for all the crap everyone talks about MS it has some pretty good capabilities for way less than a big name EM.

No build thread, I am still doing the basic rust work and stripping of EVERYTHING.

Keep updating this!!! I have never done this big of a build and need ideas.

  10. Did some work this weekend, POR15'd the front end, cut out some rust etc. All I need to do is weld in the floor pans, and the interior will be pretty much done. The body is almost ready for paint, just need to mount the sideskirts (I had to cut the fender for rust and am doing a quick fix of just hiding it.)

The gauges don't work some days. Some days it won't start and some days it runs like a champ. Weird little car

I plan on painting it silver, the original color was silver do you guys think I should pull the motor and repaint the engine bay too? I kind of just want to drive the thing already!!
