  1. what is so bad about the 7mgte? Everyone who hasn't worked with them claims they are not good engines - I get the impression they are the bastard child toyota engine. Same with nissans' KA24. We all know how much power the 2jz will make, but don't rule out the 7m. This is an awesome engine and is extremely stout. Sure, it doesn't have the pistons of the 2jz, but some would argue that the connecting rods in a 7m are stronger than those in a 2jz. Toyota didn't skimp when they designed this engine. I've seen dyno vids online of a 7m with a big single and forged pistons (note: didn't replace connecting rods) making well over 700 hp. It shares the same 5 speed found in sc300's and that one year MKIV TT's had a 5 speed. If you wanted a getrag 6 speed, its a MKIV bellhousing and tranny swap away. Ohh, and people always get hung up on the head gasket blowing - Get Some ARP studs and a new head gasket - not hard people. It also has a longer stroke (albeit smaller bore) - 92mm stroke I believe - so its a torquey I6. Why is it you ruled out the 7M?
  2. I don't see any problem with this at all. It sounds like a fairly straight forward swap. One thing I found searching for info on VG's is that "A VG is a VG is a VG". Apparently with the older single overhead cam VG's, there are no differences in FWD and RWD blocks (I haven't confirmed the 4WD ones). So, yes, the turbo Z motor should work. In japan, some FWD SOHC VG maxima's came with turbos from the factory. I know of one person that bought one of these engines and is now making 430+hp and 450+ft/lb on the stock bottom end. He put the turbo maxima engine in his Z31 300zx, so this, in a way, proves that there should not be much of a problem with switching RWD to FWD. I don't remember what issue, but some time ago, in the "Reader's Ride" section of SCC, they featured an older maxima with this swap (except I think he had a twin turbo setup on his). I am looking for a VG30E for a buildup to swap into a 240sx, so I've researched this alot. Its much easier to find a maxima VG in good condition, low miles, and low price versus a 300zx or nissan pickup/pathfinder VG. Make sure you pick up one that was manufactured after 4/87. After this month/year, they made a stronger forged crank, which is more suited for sustained high torque/hp loads. Its the same crank used in the TTZ32. You can find used TTVG pistons for 150-200$. Some used con rods from a TTVG, Nissan Motorsport cams for 250, etc.etc. Its not too difficult or expensive to make alot of power with these engines.
  3. Don't forget the KA24DE - out of the venerable 240sx. I'm a 240 owner, so naturally I'm biased, but this is an awesome engine too. It too has piston oil squirters. Its a super stout engine - its just not built with super strong rods and pistons from the factory like a 4g or 2jz. Still, people have made 370 hp on factory bottom ends. 500+ hp with built bottoms. I've read that japanese engine builders/tuners Tomei examined the engine and stated that it was one of the strongest nissan 4 cylinder designs - so take what you can from that.
  4. ... yes VG30DETT's and the non-turbo Z32's (VG30DE) have oil squirters. The pistons on the TT's have a small hole drilled near the edge of the piston. The oil squirters on the TT direct oil flow right up into the hole, and then onto the bottom of the piston. The Non-turbo Z32 VG30DE's have oil squirters, but no provisions for that oil hole in the piston. They just squirt onto the bottom of the piston. This is what some people switch to when the build their TTVG's, since the aftermarket forged pistons usually don't have the oil hole drilled. I don't see what advantage you really have with them anyway.

  7. I have been looking everywhere trying to figure this out. Check out this link to a picture of a RB20DET scatterplate atop a KA bellhousing Post with two pictures. I know the KA trans is strong - this is just for a different project. What I need to know is if the Z32's transmission will mate to the KA24(D)E's bellhousing. The picture suggests that it will (minus the three holes). Even if I did weld, fill, and redrill those for the KA bellhousing, would the internals all line up - can I assume that the input shaft of the Z32, the clutch assembly, etc would line up because almost all the holes line up? The post I linked to is confusing. Apparently the RB20DET uses the same trans as the KA (i guess is what he's saying). Does a RB25DET trans mate to a RB20DET without problems? Is a VG30DE and VG30DETT trans the same as a RB25DET? Answer the three above and I think we could solve my problem. Thanks everyone.
  8. I never knew about this turbo rear wheel drive combonation. So I have some basic questions. What I've gathered from too many hours on the internet: 2.6 liter inline turbo 4 cyl. 5 speed trany SOHC I think it has ... and thats about it ... can someone answer any of these or direct me to a website with the answers: 1) is the engine free-reving; does it like to (read "can it?) rev to 8 grand (it has balance shafts from what I've read) 2) how much power have people made in these cars? 3) easy/cheap to upgrade? 4) how strong was it built from the factory? 5) how strong is the tranny? 6) how strong is the block - heavy duty bearings, thick cylinder walls...etc.etc. 7) is this a good engine for sustaned high HP loads? 8) whats the engine code for these things 9) how cheap and accesable are these engines in the US thanks everyone

  10. Where is there a good source of info on the 7mgte? I'm looking for a forum or person/people that have worked alot with this engine. I've read alot of good things about this engine. Besides being cheap and turbo, its also supposedly very stout - con rods that are stronger than 2JZ?. I want to know how strong the other rotating parts, etc. are in the engine and how far some people have pushed it. Any help is appreciated.
  11. Alright, I'm just trying to expand my knowledge of sport car engines. I've been reading on the mazda rotary engines and wanted to know the answers to some basic questions. I figured I should put this question here since I figure the 13B makes about as much power as a 6cyl. Here goes 1) how much HP can you make with these engines 2) how much do these engines cost if you were going to swap one 3)are they durable under sustaned high HP loads (ie. road racing) 4) with their simple design, wouldn't it be cheaper to make higher HP (and more reliably). I've been reading online (RX7club.com rotarypower.com RX7forum.com etc) for several hours now and haven't found a site/forum post that answers these questions. Many of the forums I've tried are 502 (too many people logged one) or are 404. Any and all help appreciated
  12. Actually, this semester I'm living in nokesville, about 5-10 minutes from manassas - yeh I'd be interested in talking with some people who know what they're doin. I was going to advertise 9,000 (and some change maybe) for the 300 - but the price is negotionable. Let me know about the cruise; is this a nissan thing or all types - I've been to some scary car meets in manassas.
  13. @ BLKMGK ... I'm a student at VT (in blacksburg) but right now I'm in northern virginia for a semester. Just bought the Z a little over a month ago and have done all the maintenance work - I'm ready to start my aftermarket purchases, but I just got my insurance bill last night and had a financial emergency, so looks like no more Z for me ... with regards to the Cima motor; I did a little research earlier and yes they do have thicker cylinder walls (more than .175") It was a single turbo in a japanese sedan. The heads are not as good as the Z's dual overhead - cima only single overhead. Other than that, all I've heard is that they're sometimes used in high load endurance VG applications (300z racing) -looks like its time to search for another 240sx *sigh*
  14. I'm am not too familiar with what V6 engines there are - that are available. I've researched the VG30DETT engines and those people that have had experience with road racing with the VG30DETT have had complaints. The cylinder walls are too thin in the areas surrounding some of the water jackets and the rod journals/rod bearings are too small and are not up to the abuse of 450RWHP continuous use. So I wanted to know more about some of the domestic V6's. What are some heavy duty V6 blocks that are up to the task of long road racing that could make 450 + RWHP (boosted of course). Now I realize that there are plenty VG's out there making more, but most are dedicated to short blasts down the strip. It has to be a V configuration to replace the (soon to be deceased) VG thats in my 90 300z - manual shifter options with these engines?? Thank you - I respect the people on this forum - you guys have always had great responses and advice to my crazy questions.

Thanks DAW - my interests in the VG30ET lie in the fact that it may: a) bolt right in place with as few modifications to the mounts as possible be one of the cheapest turbo V6 options for me c) maintain the handling in the car (240sx) without screwing with the suspension dynamics (as an I6 appears it would) d)capable of producing higher HP than the KA with fewer modifications and less stress on the engine and my wallet. ... I asked about parts being interchangeable with the VG30DETT since parts were so prolific for this engine. Pistons, rods, crank, parts of the valve train, the "rock crusher" transmission - simply more parts and at a cheaper price. Somehow I know this would make it too easy, so probably none of the aforementioned parts are going to swap into a VG30ET. Anyway, please, anyone with info on this engine, I'd appreciate it. Simple things - how strong is the engine - thick cylinder walls? piston oil squirters? solid main cap girdle? heavy duty transmission? and how high have people pushed these engines. Thanks everybody.
  16. OK, some of you may realize that I'm not researching for upgrades on a Z, but hopefully some of the post here will help other Z-people. I have a few questions about the VG engine line specifically the VG30ET. Most important to me is finding out whether the engine mounts on the VG30ET will fit a KA24DE's. Things that I was thinking about: 1) nissan pickups came equipped with either a KA I4 or a VG V6; ...so the KA and VG engines should be interchangeable in the pickups provided you remove or mount the brackets that came with the I4 or V6. 2) the VG30ET is in the same family as the VG found in the pickups, so they should be interchangeable ... while reading on z31.com, I read about a swap from a NA to Turbo VG in a Z31 300zx and apparently the engine mounts are slightly different since nissan had to accomodate the turbo. But upgrading to the turbo engine meant simply replacing one cross member - simple enough. - and, what kind of power have those people out there using the VG30ET safely accomplished? -are some engine parts from the VG30DETT interchangeable with the ET ?? thanks everyone
  17. ... I looked at the pictures, Scottie-GNZ, and I agree - it looks like too much of the weight would be at the front of the car ... I looked on freshalloy about "reading nissan engine codes". The VG30ET - I'm guessing this is the turbo V6 in the first generation 300zx. Is this right? I was thinking it was the VG30DET. Does it have dual overhead cams? And it's an iron block with aluminum heads, no? Could you tell me a little about this engine. The nissan hardbody came with the KA24DE (and KA24E) and also a VG series V6, so the engine mounts would not be that far off. This might make my quest for a 6 cyl. a little easier. Any more thoughts? - thanks everyone.
  18. I'm am very concerned about the weight issue. The handling in these cars is awesome so I don't want to screw with that too much. And yes, the GN options sounds very intriguing too - cept I don't know too much about it. I researched the 7M option because it made huge hp and was very cheap. I'm not sure if a V6 would fit although some people have done the VG30DETT. It makes some awesome power but the car handles like crap afterwards. This won't be for drag racing either ... ... from what I've read, Nion, the trans for non-t and turbos is not the same IIRC - r154 vs r150 if I had to guess. Somewhere I read the 2jz 6 speed either bolted right on or, they made adapter housings for the transmission. This engine sounds like an untapped resource to me ... once people get over the fact that the factory didn't torque the head down tight enough, there's huge potential I think for this engine ... But I'm open to other suggestions everyone. I've exhausted my research on the SR20 and the tranny on the KA is marginal at high HP. Could someone give me a brief description of this GN engine. Anybody else have an economical engine suggestion keeping in mind that I want to maintain the cars handling. Thanks everyone
  19. I hope everyone doesn't mind me posting my 240sx question here - I know - not a z car, but its kinda close, right? and theres only one forum for us to post on so I need to ask other people. I'm looking at economical 6 cylinder engine options for the 240. I am well aware of the sr20 option and turboing the ka since its all that is ever discussed and tried. I was looking at choices of engines for swaps and only the 7mgte appears to be a frugal choice. I've been reading online about the engine and it seems to be a stout toyota engine with several making 700+ HP. I don't need 700, but the option to boost to 400-500 with the torque of a six cyl. would be nice. So, if anyone has worked with these engines, could you tell me a little more about them. How strong are they; heavy for their size?; impressions, etc.
  20. ... And finally ... Theres a member on the 240 forum that I asked the same question. He races z cars and told me that I could never achieve 500hp from a L motor without racing gas and more money than I can earn. From frequenting the z forums, though, it seems like many people have succesfully made 500 hp from their inline 6. So is 500hp possible? Anybody out there running this much HP? Any websites that have their specs and mods. Would the engine be durable? Help me out here ... thanks
  21. If the engine swap I mentioned earlier (2.8 turbo L from zx in my 96 240sx) is an option, then I need to consider the engine weight. I don't want to drastically change the dynmics of my front suspension if this engine is a hog. The KA with manifold and accessories was weighed in (I've read) at around 340-350 lbs. In a previous posts I've read that the zx L motor weighed anywhere from 350-480lbs. A more recent post from your board said (IIRC) 470lbs. Anybody have a definite number. 350-480 is a broad number. In any case I'm going to have to lighten the engine and the front of my car. Please help me. Thanks from a lost 240sx owner.
  22. OK, don't laugh at my idea just yet ... there is poor support for my S14 compared to the z cars (and only 2 forums on the internet dedicated to the US S14). I want to hear what you guys have to say since you have tons more experience than my fellow 240sx forum members. If some of you don't know, my 96 240 is graced with an inline 2.4 liter NA 16 valve 155hp, 159ft/lb KA24DE engine - also found in nissan trucks, altimas, forklifts etc. The engine is a stout little piece, but the connecting rods, crank, and pistons are its weak point. Moderately boosted engines have achieved 300hp. Forged pistons and rods have yielded 380hp, but their durability at these higher hp is marginal. Another option that is popular is swapping the J-spec SR20DET which comes factory turboed. From its small displacement, though, it lacks torque. And pushing it to 500hp is expensive (and your still left with NO torque). I've heard of people swapping RB26DETT and RB25DET's into their 240's before, but these are entirely too expensive here in the US and all aftermarket parts must be shipped from japan (hence, more money). This brings me to the idea of swapping in a turbo ZX into my 240. Since the L series was the predacessor (sp??) of the RB inline 6', and the RB has been placed in a 240, why couldn't a 2.8 turbo L be placed in the 240. Aftermarket support for the L motor is huge compared to the KA. This post is already too long, so I'll end here with the question, " what do you guys think about this engine swap idea - your thoughts, concerns, etc." Thank you so much. I'll post a few more questions so I don't have to turn this post into a novel
