Sooooo, it's been a few years now.. where'd this car end up? I keep coming across this thread while looking at widebody threads hahah.
Probably in z car heaven by now..

Thanks guys!!! I have a 79 that we are going to put on a silverado chassis. The car is rusted to the core and I cant get a title for my truck so we are just going to make a hell of a project out of the two. The frame will have to be stripped down to running gear first then measurements begin for shortening. It's early stage but we're all motivated.
Thanks again guys!
oh and by the way, I wouldn't DARE do this to my 76. I'm not an animal

I cannot find this car anywhere. My Google-fu is usually black belt level but I just can't pull it off.
It was an s30. The guy cut the whole front end and it was flat like a 510. Then he put the headlights back in and did a "challenger" styled front bumper out of fiberglass.
Could anyone help me find this beast? I have a 79 rust bucket and I'm looking for certain inspiration on this rather bizarre build we are planning. I'll start a thread once we get started

Guess this is where I could be thanking someone.. Oh well... I'll keep digging.

Hey Tank! Love this build!
Quick question though:
Could you, given the very specific compatibility between my project and yours, tell me what wiring and electrical components i would need in order to make sure i won't buy a big boat anchor?
I've only ever swapped in old carbureted v8 engines back when I was younger and now that i'm on my own.. Im just afraid ill never get the thing to turn over.
If i have the ecu and the engine wiring harness.. what else could i be over looking? Are vq engines known for having odd security features that require some heavy re-wiring?
I have a 76 and I'm ABOUT to chose my engine and get started.
It has a 350 in it but the install was not done to my satisfaction
I currently have my eye on either a 5.3 chevrolet, a vq with 6mt or an i6 with a 5 speed.
I guess my question is just: Exactly what goes into making a vq motor start and run outside of the machine it was originally pulled from?

This is really cool. Nice job man.
And of course, thanks for your service.

How much does this sell for?
-
I really like the end result. Nice.
-
I may be selling my engine and trans kit soon.
Keep in mind, it is still in the box so I'd probably look to get most of my money back ( i still have a car to build, also
I'm a Ford guy at heart but I may swing towards the 5.3 for a few different reasons.

Make me an LF-A while you're at it?
(To the uninformed few... Lexus pioneered a CF manufacturing process that is similar to this but wayyyyy more complex)

Just moved from Conway to Kansas.. and my car is up by Jonesboro.. I hadn't realized that i had so many brethren right there at home.. sigh..

If you are willing to make a minor compromise, I suggest checking out "paint mods" on YouTube. This is what I have planned to do. They use a special paint that requires no baking and gives pain a very metallic chrome finish. I believe the video is called "how to paint chrome".

Or put your back up display on your sun visor. Flip down when needed.
Man I remember when a simple screen was 200$. Your idea s great and not too hard to afford now. A+++ suggestion buddy, Love it!!

I already own a backup camera system. Honestly, as lame as it may sound, I may mount my Tablet on a hinge or something and just install my backup screen behind it. Yeah, its not super elegant but I don't care enough about it to do it a different way.
Also, please guys, share any arduino ideas you may have. I have considered installing a different ac system. If a tablet could control it, well that would just be swell

excellent! now I need another asus transformer tho
-
weird, I got on here to search if anyone had tried this or maybe pulled an entire system from something like a Miata or Vette. Thanks guys!!
-
bought some parts from him. Very good stuff and a very nice guy.
-
I'll ask as well. Any news on a dash?
-
I had been planning on a V8 Miata conversion but after seeing some 240z pics I think id rather have a z.
Is that your FINAL answer?
-
hmm im a cdl driver so ill have to figure it out later when I can get near it. but I dont know where I got 4:11. I think its probably a stock rear for an auto 76.
-
They never are. People ask me how much mine is worth and my first response is always, "You mean to me or the rest of the world?"
MPH = (Engine Speed in RPM) / (Total Gear Ratio) X (Wheel Circumference in Inches) / 1056
Your tires must be about 23.63" tall for that to make sense. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.
Thanks buddy! And funny you put it like that. We picked it up and drove it home (3.5 hr drive that took 5 hrs.)
And when we got it back to my home town, my wife looked at me and said "what would you sell this car for, right now?" (knowing full well that ive been planning to buy one for almost 10yrs) ... I looked at her and said " truthfully, not much less than 5k$"... She apparently wasnt expecting that response

any more word on this?
-
Anyway.. It's in a bad way..
It's pretty sweet. It's not worth the parts im about to stuff into it but... so?
Anyhow I have a couple of questions. One, if someone swaps in a 350 with a t350a trans, would 3800rpm sound right for 65mph at the stock 4:11 gears on stock tires? It sure wasn't a fun ride home, especially since it has apparently needed valve seals for a very long time. I slowed down to keep the load low but it was chugging about 1qt of oil per hour at about 2800rpm. no matter, I'm looking into a much more -ahem- "financially intensive"- approach to bringing this beast beyond its previous prime. Mechanically inclined individuals just haven't given this car enough attention, sadly..
Anyhow, i guess thats my only question for now. Thanks guys!!

A 5.5" backspace rim will require coil overs to clear. You might be able to get away with a 1" wheel spacer and no coil overs (doubtful) but you'll have to installer much linger wheel studs.
Thanks, im not well exposed to suspension/wheels yet so its a little bit confusing for me. I do understand.what you said and I will keep it in mind. Ill have the beast picked up in a week then I can get a better reference. Ive wanted a datsun for over 10yrs, cant wait!
Thanks again!
Front end conversion (it was black and looked like a Dodge)
in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z

Yup. We will try to keep it low but the Datsun will be all but completely cut underneath. The floor will all be fabricated to accommodate for how low we can actually rest the body. (The radiator and overall length had me considering a 510 style front end like that challenger project but I doubt we do that.
It's still in planning but the project is coming. Getting new leads for our arc welder and ordering a mig welder. I've had a lot of projects die off early so it's nice to have 2 other folks excited to help. Fkn fingers crossed, boys!
