Now THAT will put you back in your seat! What size tires do you run on the back of that bad boy? -Vann
-
Ok... a few reasons: a) The s2000 5.5 0-60 time was established by professional drivers. Everyone here figures out their 0-60 times on their own, so.... the 5.5 s2000 time is maxed out and official while the hybrid Z times are most likely lower than they could be and definately unofficial. 1st gear traction - how many guys here do you think get traction with all of that v8 torque??? I'd say... 5% max. It's easy for a 4 cyl car with some fairly wide(for an import) tires to hook up and speed away... not much torque under the s2000 hood either. c) redline - v8s have fairly low redlines... meaning earlier shifts which disrupts your run to 60mph. The s2000 has a 9000rpm redline (if I remember correctly) making it easier for them to get going in only 1 gear and then shifting without much loss in momentum. d) 2nd gear traction - same thing... how many s2000's can lose traction while shifting into 2nd gear??? none! I'd say almost all of our hybrids would break traction twice while trying to get to 60mph. Now.. get a 2800 lb HybridZ with your 350hp/350tq, put some FAT tires on there, some limited slip... give it an AWESOME driver, hope your CV shafts don't break and see what your 0-60 time is. It will be FAST! It's all relative... the s2000 is a factory car, it should be set up to get a decent number. If you took our cars and gave em enough traction to compensate for the power... you'd have one heck of a low time. I'm hoping to be close to 5.0 seconds when I get out and drive mine. Some midly fat & sticky 265's on all 4-corners should help me get there... I just hope I can drive it well enough! -Vann

Hey Phantom, I just looked at your pics (NICE, NICE, NICE ), where did you find that elbow pipe for your intake? I'm going to need to make an intake setup for my car this weekend, but I need a pipe EXACTLY like that one to get it to work. thx 80LT1 - when I was talking about aerodynamics.. I guess I was just thinking about my friend who has a G-Nose on his 280. But seriously.. if you compare it to other 70's cars... they were pretty aerodynamic.. I mean, come on... how bad would it be compared to a 1975 Mustang??? -Vann
-
Hmm.. I guess the carbs might not help you out in that department, but of course.. gas mileage in a HybridZ is usually lost due to um, ... that independent, 85lb. right foot over there. But seriously though, a lot of it has to do with your gearing and what kind of transmission you have. Datsuns are lightweight and fairly aerodynamic so you've already improved your mileage there. I used to have a 5-speed w/ 4.10 gears in my Z when it had the v6 and got awful gas mileage... something like 11 city and 19 freeway. Now I've got a 6-speed and those same 4.10 gears and I can cruise at 70mph at only 1600 rpms! (According to my dad who has driven it 75 miles coming home from work). You should be fine, I would guess that a 3-speed automatic (not saying you have this) might not be the right transmission to go on a long trip on.. but then again, if your gears are low enough... it just depends. I'm sure I'll be getting great gas mileage, and so should just about every other hybridZ out there... as long as that right foot behaves! Enjoy your trip, and take some pics! -Vann

Lol.. hey, for all you know, there could be an SS camaro sitting behind the camera and I'm just playin this whole thing out...but that would just be dumb! No.. I haven't driven it yet.... I'm holding out until it's completely done. I KNOW it's going to be fast... heck... the fastest car I've driven (or sat in for that matter) since my conversion started, has been my 1986 BMW 325es... thats the "Efficiency Sport" model... a whopping 125 crank horses (for 1 year and 10 months now!). I actually am considering putting some plastic seat covers on before I drive it for the first time so my nice leather seats will be safe... ya know, just in case. My dad drove it to the body shop and didn't know how to describe it... basically, he told me it reminded him of the good 'ol days of when he used to drive his 66 GTO... except.... it's SCARY FAST! He hasn't had a 'quick' car since 1984 and that was a first-gen RX7... he sold that and drove a Volvo tank for 15 years and now he's been stuck with our family minivan. I feel so bad for him... he LOVES the new 350z's, so I always buy him shirts and accessories for the new Z and egg him on to buy himself one! 8) I can't help but let him be the first to drive my Z... he just loved it when I let him take it to work back when it had the v6, I'll have to let him do it again now too! He's been so helpful and supportive with my swap, I think it's been a way for him to get back into cars which he's missed so much and also to spend some good quality time with me (we haven't had much of that ever until the conversion).. it's amazing what an insane hybridZ swap can do! -Vann -

LONG story.. but to make it short: it was illegally taken off the car (basically stolen) and I'll be getting compensation sometime in the future. Once I get the money back... I've got 2 options lined up: A) Stay NA and do a big heads/cam swap plus some other cool stuff Get a c5 vette procharger system (that one will fit under my stock hood ) We'll just have to wait and see how large the check is. My goal is to get my HP/TQ ratings up to the equivalent of the new Viper or better... 500/500 is a nice figure to aim for! I'm so in love with the sound.... back when I started tinkering with the idea of a v8 swap' date=' I had to decide which engine to use. I looked out for various v8 cars while driving and then I heard this gorgeous tone come out of a black 2000 SS... that's what sealed the deal on the LS1 for my swap. Turned out the guy had a dual exhaust setup (awesome since that's the only thing I would even consider on my car) and he was using magnaflow mufflers... I went with dual Dynomax's.. but the sound is EXACTLY the same. It's fun to watch the video, but the effect is kinda goofed up since my car is in such poor shape in the vid. I extracted the audio and played the mp3 seperate just to listen.. and all I can picture in my mind when I hear it is that same black SS. I can't wait to get a new vid of it revving once it's painted, has the hood on it and also my new 18x9 polished wheels! Then I'll really be able to get the total effect of the conversion! Yup... I'm looking into a set of headers right now.. hopefully long-tube! But just intake, full exhaust and some tuning will yield close to 65hp !!! I actually started with my NA... it ran just fine and had 102,000 miles on it. I kinda said "Screw it" to my mom's... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy and completely tore the car apart! I already knew I wasn't going to get rid of my car.. even with the stock non-turbo v6... but I figured this would MAKE me want to keep her around. Hehe.. maybe for the next released vid.. I'll add that effect just for ya! lol Thanks for all the compliments guys! I'll try and keep the media coming in weekly as the car nears total completion! -Vann -

it's posted... I know it's not much... but it sounds good -Vann -
A few quick revs: http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/video/z32ls1_video1.avi Lemme know what y'all think! Ignore the bad paint.. it's getting fixed pronto! I've got a small leak in the driver-side header gasket... just makes the car sound funny with that extra putt-putt-putt sound! Not to worry though, I'll be getting new headers soon and it will be taken care of! This is the first footage ever released of my z32 ls1 conversion! Let me just say this... (besides the exhaust leak)... it sounds... (*i'm at a loss of words at the moment*).... perfect. -Vann

LOL! I'll have to look into the legalities.. but I don't think it applies here, I don't think I've ever seen them check my wipers during an inspection. -Vann

Alright... replies in order: John - Burnout vids - oh man.. that'll be fun! I don't want to mess up those tires too bad though... I'm going to sell the stock wheels/tires once I get my new ones on.. can't sell someone a set of belts & sidewalls... can I? Wheelman/Drax240z - The idea of 2 90' sections sounds good.. but the spring idea sounds easier and less expensive! We'll see if I can find a suitable srping... if not, I'll get the 90' pipes. Thanks for those suggestions! Wheelman... what kind of pics are you looking for exactly? Just pics of all the mounts? Lemme know.. I've probably got somethin I can show ya. Mat73gnz - LONG story.. but to make it short: it was illegally taken off the car (basically stolen) and I'll be getting compensation sometime in the future. Once I get the money back... I've got 2 options lined up: A) Stay NA and do a big heads/cam swap plus some other cool stuff Get a c5 procharger system (that one will fit under my stock hood ) We'll just have to wait and see how large the check is. My goal is to get my HP/TQ ratings up to the equivalent of the new Viper or better... 500/500 is a nice figure to aim for! 80LT1 - It's listed above... first thing I'm doing with the car once it's done is cleaning the engine bay! I have some wicked ideas... it's going to look VERY clean. I've got the C5 Corvette fuel rail covers on the way.. those alone will make it look nicer. On top of those (which I am customizing) I am basically going to go all-out with aluminum panels that will cover just about everything 'cept the engine itself. I'm going to be taking this car to a LOT of shows and obviously the engine is the centerpiece of the creation.. so I am WELL aware of how clean it needs to be... and I'll make it that clean, and then cleaner! I am ridiculous when it comes to tidyness and organization... you should see my room and inside of my computer... it's almost sick how tucked away everything is. I am going to have a bunch of fun with the sleeper aspect. I can't wait! -Vann
-
That sounds like a winner to me!!! When you stopped at the gas station to clean of the windshield.. are you talking about water-spots? I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. 8) Thanks for the tip.. I think you just made my life a whole lot easier! -Vann

Well as usual... more delays for me. The body shop has pretty much done nothing with my car for 3 weeks except take the huge cowl hood off and set a junker hood on top. Called 'em up today and let them have it... it'll be done by next weekend. (fingers-crossed) Here's what's left: (just little things.. not much) These are the body shop's tasks: - PAINT (you'll see in the pic below) - Install hood & latch mechanism - Re-fit front bumper Once that's done... I drive home and fix what's left: - 2 wiper motors from a 5th gen Corvette (the only ones that will fit now) - Find a simple way to route the intake so it doesn't interfere with the hood latch After those 2 things are taken care of.. the car will be totally driveable with a stock hood back on it. After that I can get into all the nitpicky things that need to be taken car of... - Put my new wheels on (see em here: http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=37214 ) - Put all the interior pieces (in the trunk area) back together - Figure out how to get my stock shift knob to fit - New radiator brackets (mine are rusty) - Aluminum panels to cover the computer and fuses in the engine bay - Corvette fuel rail covers (I'm going to sand 'em and custom paint them) - Painted intake manifold (as close to polished as I can get it to look) - Relocate the trunk battery (i'm buying a lightweight one and sticking it in my spare-tire well.) - whatever other little tiny things I can think of It's all really simple stuff to do. I just need to get the car back from the body shop so I can get started! Sucks that it's been delayed again though... soon though... soon. On with the pics: oh ya.... I WILL HAVE A VIDEO FOR YOU SUNDAY!!!!!! (no driving.. but starting and revving will be included! ) This makes me want to cry... I'll take care of the green zip-ties soon enough... I'm building aluminum covers for this side... And all of this stuff too... The shift knob WILL be chaged... this one is only temporary. This battery box will be removed and replaced with a hidden setup. These are keeping me very happy about my car! Wish me luck on the rest of the little things! -Vann

I LOVE PANASPORTS! 8) If I ever own a Datsun (and I will) those are the first thing I'm buying! On3Go.. very very sexy wheels.. nice meaty rubber back there too! Here are mine, Just got 'em... I'll update once I actually put them on the car. http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=37214 -Vann

Well.. they didn't JUST arrive, but I just came back home from school to check 'em out... they are B-E-A-U-TIFUL!!! These are one helluva upgrade from stock.... 2 extra inches of wheel (width AND diameter) and 3 extra inches of tire! Now THAT'S what I'm talkin bout! All I need to do is go pick up a set of hubcentric rings from Discount Tire, and then wait on my tires.... I miiiight need spacers to get these to fit up front in my car, but I'll have to wait to find out. I've heard so many horror stories from people who have nice things shipped via UPS, but I couldn't believe how nice my stuff stayed. Get this... when they brough them to my house... no one was home, so instead of stacking them by thr front door... the UPS guy stacked them in 2 sets up against my garage door and then moved our 2 huge trash cans in front of them so they'd be hidden!! How awesome is that?!? I'm REALLY appreciative since there are a bunch of bratty high-school terds in my area.. so there was a GOOD chance they would have been taken or tampered with. YAY UPS! Here's a mandatory Box picture to get y'all started: and the rest..... Size printed on boxes... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_2.jpg Awesome packing job... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_3.jpg Protective ring and cheese cloth!... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_4.jpg Ooooooh.... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_5.jpg Aaaaaah.... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_6.jpg Awwww, yeeaaahhh.... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_7.jpg Wider is better... http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_8.jpg 24mm offset... I'm probably going to need spacers. :| http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/auser/wheels_9.jpg The set of 265/35/18's are on the way and should be here by next Friday! 8) As long as everything fits, I'll have em on the car next weekend... otherwise I'll have to buy spacers before I can get them rollin. Let's hope for the best! -Vann

Congrats! The first start-up is always the best! Now get the rest of it done and unleash the beast! -Vann -
Ya.. I'm REALLY striving to do this right the first time so I don't have to fool with it later. I think I've come up with a solution though... I'd be able to really see if it works if I were at home. - Use the stock wiper motor, but disable the passenger side wiper by removing the attatched linkage and only run the driver side wiper. - advantages -- I can use the stock wiring and buttons... it would be a cheap fix - problems with this option... only the fact that I'll have decreased width of visibility during rain, and it's a bit ghetto to only have one working wiper. I think this is the route I am going to take. Hopefully it wont be too hard to rig the system to work how I want it to. It's a shame though... if anyone sees me driving through rain, they're going to point and laugh at my one measly wiper! I might look into a better fix later on that enables both wipers to work... but for now, this will get my car on the road and driveable in all conditions! I'll keep y'all updated. I'll have pics this weekend as long as she's out of the paint shop! -Vann

Ok.. I'm down to the LAST component of my Z... the wipers. Here's the situation: I had my firewall moved back a few inches so I could mount my ls1 lower and further back. In order to do this, a new wall had to be made around the back of the engine that protrudes into the area where my windshield wiper linkage is supposed to be. The stock wiper setup will not work since the linkage cannot go through this new wall. The only possible option I have found is something called a "Dual Reversible Motor" setup. Basically this is "two reversing motors located at both extremities of the windshield avoiding the need for bulky linkage. " Looks like this: (this pic is pretty accurate too.. that green box between the motor represents the new wall built on the firewall. but my passenger side wiper originates from the middle of the windshield, not the far left ) Same kinda thing you see on a bus.. but smaller. Do I have any other options? I wish I was at home so I could take some pictures of exactly what the problem is. I think if I were able to get ahold of 2 similar motors.. but not reversed.. just 2 of the same that would turn the same direction, I could just mount those up and then wire them to move simultaneously. Any input would be great! (I finish my Z once these wipers work! ) Thanks -Vann

I hear ya on the mods! The Z's are too dang addictive.. and it's REALLY bad if you want performance and start with a NA! Guess thats why we had to dump V8's in em huh!! 8) Very cool of you to realize your priorities and get back to your education... I'm currently in school and now that my Z is just about to roll out of the body shop... I'm kinda worried about my studies! I'll probably be drawing Z's and whatnot on my tests next week just anxiously awaiting it's final unveiling. Well.. you definately completed your goal. SO MANY PEOPLE KNOW about the LS1 Z32 now! It's all over and just about everyone wants one! Kinda sad because it's nice to own such a unique car.. I mean come on... 1 of 2 ever made! Pretty nice statistic to be a part of! But as the number grows, it'll still boil down to the originals and that's something I can live with. Heck, I dont think I'll be seeing many other LS1 z32's in Texas too soon. Bravo once again on your swap, I almost wish you had finished yours earlier so I coulda gotten some tips while workin on mine! But all is well, and someone else will soon own a part of history when your auction ends and feel (maybe not the total satisfaction) but the same enjoyment that we get to experience from our work. The SportZ article still irks me a bit... I'm a jealous person, but I know you can see that by now! But I'm sure I'll have my fame and hopefully (fingers crossed) my very own article sometime in the future to frame, save and be proud of. On the negative note (for me)... the SC had to come off! Actually.. it didnt have to come off... but the shop guy that I refer to in my other posts (Phil) stole it and most likely sold it to get some quick cash. Long story short... I dont have an SC anymore, but he's in jail and getting sued so I can get a heads/cam swap! And then I'll have the fastest. Cheers to you once again, good luck with your auction and do well with your studies! I hope you'll stick around to see my Z when it's posted soon... and if I ever manage to make it THAT far up north, I'll definately look you up ! 8) -Vann (LS1 Z32 - #2 of 2)

Curious why you're selling? I guess the magazine article gave you and that car a lifetime worth of exposure... wish I coulda finished sooner and got myself a cool article like that! Maybe I can find another magazine to do a feature... although SportZ was definately the best one. DANG YOU! I'm jealous! I enjoyed reading the article, it was interesting to see how things were done so differently between my swap and yours. Hope you had the chance to enjoy the car before you sell it! I cant imagine selling mine without having some fun first! Take care, good luck with the sale, and here's to many more cool swaps! -Vann (the other ls1 z32 guy) <--- that's my label from now on!

Wow, I have hated the way things have been going for the past 2 years. One bad thing after another once the swap was underway with my Z. Fortunately, the owner of the shop that gave me so much trouble is now behind bars! He'll be there for a while too with 3 people filing charges of grand theft totaling nearly $500,000 !!!! That's not including my money, lol! Hooray for justice! On another note, the Z starts up, runs, drives, sounds incredible and doesn't overheat! It's even got power steering! Right now it is at a body shop getting the last few cosmetic issues sorted out and then it's back home and ready to be released to the public! I was hoping to get it out to the Z show in Round Rock, TX on the 18th of this month... but some custom hood-latch fabrication needs to be done and will most likely overrun that date. I'm not too concerned though.. I've been waiting for my car since December 2002... I can wait a few more weeks. Heres all that's left to be done: - Relocate hood-latch (btw.. no more cowl hood, back to stock ) - Install windshield wiper motor and blades (removed when engine was set back) - Fix rusty area in pit where wiper-motor goes (yuck) - Re-paint and re-fit the front bumper (got REALLY torn up by a tow truck while I wasn't around to supervise) - Touch up chips in paint all around the car - Give me back my car so I can freakin enjoy it!!! I haven't driven it since I've been up at school, but my dad drove it to the body shop and said, "It's indescribable how this thing makes you feel... it left me breathless. You BETTER NOT be racing in this car when it's done!" lol, I figured he say something like that! Once it's done at the body shop... I'll be taking it to a muffler shop to get some different tips welded on and the mufflers straightened out.. they don't line up straight right now. And after that, off to Discount Tire to have them put on my new, polished 18x9 Y2K Cobra R wheels and fit em up with some nice rubber! I'm excited yet again... nearly 2 years without my car and FINALLY.. it's coming home. And this time I know for sure since it's in the hands of friends... not low-life pathalogical liar Phil. Have fun in prison Phil... I hope Bubba over there bends you over and makes you realize how this world is supposed to work... I'll be out enjoying my car, like I should have been so long ago. Ok, ok. ok..... I KNOW I've promised pics, video, audio and all that time and time again. Let me take this time to formally apologize for all the false promises. So many things went wrong and I never had the chance to get ANY of those. So this is my new promise... and it's solid. Once my car has completed the things listed above and is safely at home and finally able to be labeled as COMPLETE... you will have your media... and yes, you will enjoy it! RIght now there is no clear deadline as I do not know how long it will take to fab up the hood latch, but it will be done very soon and I'll be back to show-and-tell. Take care all, drive safely.. and enjoy your Z's a little extra to make up for the long time I've been without mine. It's good to be back, -Vann
