  1. Tomorrow i will be ordering parts for my build. LQ4 4L80e combo.

I am unsure about where to get a trany mount for my car. Is the mounting the same for the 4l80 and 4l60? Do i need to custom fabricate a mount?

Any other information would be greatly appreaciated from anyone. Thankyou.

  2. Hey i have a LQ4/4L80e combo. i know i can get the mounts for the motor from broken kitty, but how did u mount the tranny into the 240z? Im guessing custom brackets. Any help i would greatly appreciate. Thankyou.

Been going like crazy trying to get the hot rod together for SEZ and last night the monster breathed! Fired up at the first turn of the key and it sure sounds bad for a small block chevy. I'm running it through 1 7/8 primary Sanderson headers and 3" from the collectors through the 3" side-pipes. Won't mistake it for a Lexus for sure. Drive train is now complete....gotta finish the wiring, put in the dash, mount and hook up the shifter, put the interior back together, and make a cover for the fuel cell and I will take it out for a test drive. This thing was an empty shell on a trailer 15 June, so I'm pleased with the progress.

Specs: 71 240Z, wide-body conversion, Small block chevy, 4L80E, Denny's driveshaft, 9 inch ford, 4:11's, Moser axles, M&H DOT rears, full cage, etc, Oh, did I forget to mention it is a 454 cu in small block chevy....go figger :o)

Should be ready to go for SEZ....it will be ugly and untested, but looking to be there....

  3. Yes, I will be retaining the stock 5.3 LM7 intake (same as the LQ4/LQ9 intake). I haven't put the motor in the Z yet because I am still raising funds for the re-freshening (budget rebuild). Although I might just use the 5.3 LM7 for the time being.

However my buddy Miles has the exact same intake on his 240z and the truck intake and alternator/alternator bracket will not clear the stock S30 hood. Luckily for Miles and myself that doesn't matter because we both are using cowl induction hoods that give us the necessary clearance for both.

Thats good to know. Cause everyone else talks about changing over all the accessories. So i thought i was stuck with having to get all the ls1 parts. Thanks for the info. Im going to the junk yard today to get another hood and im probally going to just cut a hole in it for now. I'll keep you updated on my swap also.

  4. All LS1 pulleys. You will need a bracket to mount the alternator lower.. You need to search a little bit, with the search function. I know for a fact that my build thread on here covers this. LS1tech.com could be your best friend as well.

Thanks. I've been searching so much. There are little tips here and there but nothing is perfectly clear like you just put it. Thanks.

  5. Looking good!

I cheated; I paid someone to do mine.....

Thats a good idea. I was thinking of doing the same because i have very little experience fabricating, but i am a certified welder. Ball park how much was it for someone else to do it for you?

  6. looking at the rear ends available....it says the the 240sx has LSD and the r200. Are they all lsd? Is there a year range, or are they all great rear ends?

R200V Short nose, 5 Bolt ouput shafts (240SX)

    Ratios 3.90, 4.08

    LSD Viscous

Which rear is this? LSD? r200?

  7. Seems like the good rear ends are from turbo cars? I saw a 1983 280zx at the junk yard today and dont know if its the r200 or the r180. The car was non turbo.

Also i saw i 300zx and that one was the older square shapped body style and it was stick shift. Which rear does that have?

Any help? i want to pull a rear end this weekend to proceed with my project on my 73 240z. Any info buddies?

Check that: just found a great site that confirms the r200, but still it doesn't say if the rear is LSD or not. Could i just spin one wheel at the junk yard and see if the other rotates opposite way? that would solve it right? if its non lsd only one wheel would spin from the turn of the drive shaft. Yay or nay? oh and heres the site

  8. It depends on what YEAR and MODEL Toyota the rear axle came from. Toyota has 2 5-lug circles, 5x100mm and 5x114.3mm.

    84-86 300ZXT and/or 87-89 300ZX front hubs are 5-bolt 114.3mm

These Toyota models have 5x114.3 wheel bolt (lug) circles:

    96-up RAV4

    90-96 PREVIA

    01-up HIGHLANDER

    80-95 PICKUP 2WD

    86-96 SUPRA,TURBO

    89-92 CRESSIDA

    99-up SOLARA

    92-up CAMRY

    95-97 AVALON

Great Info trevor. thanks. What would my options be if i have the 5x100mm?

  9. I went in today and bought the complete rear end assembly and 4 , 2 piston calipers 25 each. Also i bout a fj80 master cylinder for the brake system. So far so good on my parts list. Now i need to figure out how to convert the fron end to 5 lug to match the rear. Guy said i can run 3:07 thru 5:29's on that toyota rear end. its an 8 inch rear and his buddy has a 5000 pound truck with 1000hp and he's has to replace the rear end every three years. so i think i'll be good on my setup.

Thankyou all for your advice. im going to post everything with my swap so i can contribute for other projects.

    Total cost was 400.

    8'' toyotaRear end assembly $200

    4 toyota calipers: $25 each

    FJ80 master cylinder: $100

  10. thanks for the info. So you guys would recommend the ford rear end? Look bottom line i want something that wont break on me. And the options i have are from a junkyard with mostly american parts. i dont have the r200 available to me.

thankyou for your info guys. i will be posting pictures soon of my Z

  11. Im starting my project for my LQ9 1973 240z and the guy at the junk yard is recomending a rear end from a small toyota pickup truck i think from the early 90's. The wheel base is a good match which was 53''. My buddy is going to do all the fabrication. the guy is telling me that his buddy runs the same rear end in his drag truck with a few parts switched out and hes runs 8's in the 1/4.

Now for the question. Anyone ever heard of or done this swap? Seems like an inexpensive resoulution to the weak 240z rear end.

Any suggestions i'd greatly appreaciate it.
