  1. I have researched this til my head hurts but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. So any opinions are welcome. I'm getting ready to put all of my front suspension back together and need to make a decision about installing the bump steer spacer and/or any other mod to make my set-up work correctly. This will be a street driven car and very "calmly" at that. Here are the facts:

    1) I have sectioned my strut tubes by 1 7/8" and using KYB strut inserts.

    2) I'm using 10" QA1 coils, 175lb-rear, 150lb-front.

    3) 5" sleeves - the bottom is mounted 5.25" from the casting in front, 7.25" in the rear.

    4) I will be using 17" wheels with 4 to 5 lug adaptors.

    5) I want to wind up with the car lowered around 2".

I have read all the issues concerning bump steer etc. and the control arm pivot relocation. So with my intended use, what other issues or concerns do you guys see that I should address?

    Thanks for any suggestions

  2. I was reading a post by "Here Comes Trouble" in "The Strut Thread" in which he suggested using VW Jetta GR2 strut cartridges in the front of a 280Z with 2" sectioned tubes and using the front 280Z cartridges in the rear. Does anyone know which (year) VW Jetta GR2's to ask for? These would be KYB's.

This 75 Z will be strictly street & show and I'm trying to get a good stance (lowered) and a good ride. I'm basically using the exact same components in the "Brians Garage" write up. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/6212/coilover/coilover.htm

    I'm using 10" QA1 springs - 150lb rear & 125lb front and intend to cut out a 2" section from the tubes. I can't remember if I have 5 or 7" sleeves.

Thanks for any help, suggestions, warnings, watchout fors etc.

  3. Hey Wedge, (or anyone else) Does anyone have a contact for the owner of the car with the leather cover. Just wanted to see how much it cost him to have it done etc. I've been planning that very same thing for my 75.

    Thanks

  4. Hey Mike, Thanks for your reply!

I don't intend to section the struts, although I do want to lower it as much as the setup allows without sectioning. I was hoping to go ahead and get the struts and put the units together without the mock up. The reason is that the car is just a hull right now.(completely stripped & on a rotissiere) Do you think thats possible?

Thanks again for your help and anymore comments are welcome.

Oh yeah, I have 10" QA1 springs, 150 rate for the front and 175 for the rear. Keep in mind this car will be strictly show, cruise & touring, no racing, so I'm basically most interested in stance and ride comfort with some improvement in handling.

  5. Hey Gang,

Question for those of you who have assembled your own coilovers. The article at "Brians Garage" details the parts list for the 240Z coilover installation. Apparently the strut tubes on my 75 280 are a bit larger than the 240 therefore the threaded tubes from Stock Car Products are to small to slide over them. For those of you who have done this conversion, where did you get your threaded tubes and nuts that work on the 280 strut tubes?

Also, would a few of you chime in and provide examples of the exact location of your lower spring perch, spring free length and any other details you care to share about your setup.

This board is outstanding for invaluable information on our cars and I think beginning to end details and specifications about particular mods (ie coilover setups) would be a great help to those who want to give it shot but aren't as technically knowledgeable (like myself) as some of the experts on this board. I am a lot more comfortable performing a modification if I don't have to guess at anything because I know someone else has done the exact same thing and that it works!! Sorry so long, just my .02 worth.

    Thanks

  6. Man, This is great stuff. I was just getting ready to post a question regarding measurements between the top inside of the tire and the coil spring on stock setups as well as with coilovers but it sounds like there aren't any clearance issues with 7 or 8" wide wheels with coilovers, correct?

Hey twoeightnine, I'm right there with you on the desired set up. I may want to go 2" lowered. I have the same problem with time. Would you do me a big favor? When you have your setup complete, would you share your parts list with me and maybe a couple of pics? I would greatly appreciate it as I'm ready to start mine as well!

Thanks again Jmortensen, DaleMX, 2126 & twoeightnine for some great info.!
