so the engine is mounted with the scarab method, and the trans is a little too far forward(i think) and thus the shifter operates a little farther forward(the guy before had to cut a 1 1/2 cm. piece of plastic from the front part of the area where the shifter sticks out from). question is: if i installed a short shifter would it coreect this since it doesn't have to move as much? or is there some other way that will work? thanks.

Dan, at least get the JTR book and read it over, especially if you have not done so already--the price is a drop in the bucket to how much you have spent already in just your carb.

You can order the setback plates and spacers from them, or have them made. I would the way that saves you the most amount to money.

It pains me to hear about the troubles you have with the car (one thing after another)especially since you just want to enjoy the car. Hope things start to look up and continue from there.

STOP...

Try to fix one thing at a time. Get the carb working and stop the fires and such before you go messing with everythig else.

If you must fix the "shifter"...Take off the shifter handle. Not the linkage. Take it to one of those cheat mechanics and heat it up and bend it back. or weld a plate on it to set it back further to the rear of the car and bold the plate to the linkage.

Also you are very brave to go that fast (over 100mph) in a car that you do not trust. Be careful; if the rest of the car has other issues similar to the ones you so far shared with us, I would not be suprised if the wheels came off.

well $hit, since that day when the car wouldn't start, and it made funny noises when i shut it off, it really hasn't been all that difficult to start or stop the car. i doubt it get better by itself, but something happened. i do have the JTR book, but not the hardware. how much would they charge to install my engine the JTR way? is it worth the trouble? all i want is the shifter to fit better through the hole into the cabin. also, i figure the best thing to do would be to take the car to a shop, have them make a laundry list of things wrong, and then me just working down the list to get the car rehabilitated. good idea? thanks.

Dan, installing the JTR mounts is not particularly difficult, but you will pay through the nose for someone else's time. I understand you may not have the most experience, but mounts are not the most difficult thing to do either. Your biggest challenge as I see it is to get or rent an engine hoist to give yourself some room to swap mounts (spacers & setback plates).

Hang in there!
