FurDozy Posted January 17, 2012 Share Posted January 17, 2012 Hey guys, I've been lurking on the forums for a while and, seeing that I'm about to get cracking on some restoration figured that this would be a great place to get some advice. I got this car from my dad for my 18th. He had picked it up from a guy for 200 bucks(apparently he was getting divorced and it was "noisy" and he lacked the time to fix it). My dad gave it a little tlc and swapped out the alternator and it's been fine minus a few heater hose problems since. My dad also gave it a bit of body work. The hood was in pretty bad shape so he used bondo to fix it up and then put a LeBra on to protect it. He also sprayed on some sort of "auto paint", but never put a clear coat or anything over it. My dad is great when it comes to mechanical knowledge, esp for the L28, but he lacks a certain attention to detail for the body work. That being said I'll just layout what I'd like to do. The majority of the work I want done is aesthetic. It runs fine for now so I'll leave it as is until I get the body fixed. First off, there's some serious rust in a few places that I need to take care of. It's mostly in the floorpan/framerail and hood areas. whith issues in the battery area in the engine compartment and some minor issues on the outside of the wheel wells. I'm trying to decide whether I should get the whole thing blasted or if I can take care of the rust without blasting. I figure I can get new pans and a hood for cheaper but I'm not sure if that's worth the money I'll save. I'll post pic's as soon as I get a good chance. Next I want to get the Interior restored to OEM condition. As far as I can tell the only tough part is gonna be the seats. Any good source for reupholstering kits or even new seats? Lastly I want to get it painted properly, get the chrome touched up(it's flaked in some areas), and get the wheels polished. I don't have much experience with this stuff but I plan to do as much as I can myself. I'm on a budget so I'm trying to keep the project as cost effective as possible, but I don't want to cut corners to the point that the work doesn't last. I have access to a military auto craft shop, so tools and equipment are easy to get for a cheap price.
