RebekahsZ
I'm finishing up wiring this weekend and will probably be connecting and disconnecting my battery a lot as I work thru my mistakes (I can't do anything right the first time). Anything I should do now (and in the future) to protect and show respect for my LSx ECU/PCM? I guess this thing has some sort of internal battery to maintain codes? This is my first excusion into a computerized car! I'm going to disconnect the three plugs into it until it is time to test the fuel pump, but once I hook it all up, should I do anything special before doing stereo work, etc other than disconnecting the battery? Please recall my earlier post titled: "Just burned up engine harness" in order to understand the idiot you are advising.
RebekahsZ
Nobody has replied. So, I'm just going to try treating it as if there was no computer. I'll disconnect battery when working on electrical and reconnect it when I'm done.
ktm
Keith, this forum tends to be a bit slow. It's ALWAYS a smart thing to disconnect the battery when working on electrical items regardless if you have an EFI or carb'd car. If you set up your power supply to the PCM "correctly", you can always just pull the power fuses to the PCM. When you disconnect the power source to the PCM all you do is reset it but it will retain any custom tune you may have. Me? I have a battery disconnect switch that I simply flip when doing electrical work on my car. Edited February 19, 2012 by ktm
mpramsey
I have not done anything special other than disconnect from battery. The only time that I have disconnected the harness from the PCM is when I was welding something on the car. Even then I have had no problems.
