QWKDTSN
I don't think it's very hard. I've not wired up my motor yet but I do have the harness ready to go. Basically you have to strip all the tape off of the wiring harness that runs along the passenger's framerail and in front of the radiator. There are ten wires you find and put into their own harness and one or two that get cut. Then you cover everything with spiral wrap from the local hardware/auto parts store. Comes out looking clean, I think better than with the tape on it, personally.
DavyZ
Just make sure you are careful in what you do and it should go fine. For me, it really comes down to the car: if everything works, the wiring/electrical is fine and I would use the stock harness to save some cash, but if there are obvious problems (bizarre lighting, multiple functions for one switch, rats nest from previous owner, etc) then I would rewire the car with a Painless harness. Good job on ordering the JTR manual! Davy
Guest Anonymous
when you say Painless kit, you mean a universal type kit they make, or do they make one for our cars....and if they don't...they should!
BLKMGK
The "Painless" harnesses aren't custom for our car and have to be cut to length etc. They have the added advantage of allowing you to get rid of the glass fuses and overheating fuse box. Still, I've not upgraded mine as it's a PITA and my harness doesn't appear to be that bad...
Guest Anonymous
yeah, can't say i love those glass fuses myself. Anyone have a decent wiring diagram they can email me or something? only one i have is a Chilton's one, and it seems rather innaccurate, and just not very well done... Guest Anonymous
The wiring is not that bad, if a wiring moron like myself can do it, anyone can. Its just unplug some stuff, strip wires back and cut them off and tape them up (a few in otherwords are unused from the stock datsun harness (having to do with the alternator I believe since you do away with the regulor)). Just follow it exactly and you'll be fine, JTR lays it out pretty good for the early Z car (first gen). Good Luck, Lone
Guest Anonymous
ok, quick question...haven't got the JTR book yet, but i do have it ordered! The wiring mods some of you guys have talked about, how complex are they? In other words, what exactly do said mods entail? I've developed a very healthy distrust of wiring...hey, anyone got a good wiring diagram? Maybe even with wire lenghts? Might just be better to rewire the entire car.
