Guest Anonymous Posted January 6, 2001 Share Posted January 6, 2001 ok guys, i need yalls expertise on this. i'm pulling the motor out of my 280Z parts car tommorrow or monday and i need to know what bolts you attach the engine hoist to in order to lift the motor out of the car. i don't want to break any bolts, or strip threads out so...... Guest Anonymous Posted January 7, 2001 Share Posted January 7, 2001 also, i am going to be pulling the head off the car. so what do yall recomend to prevent the block/cylinders/pistons from rusting? i thought about coating it in thick gear oil. is this a good idea or should i do something else? also, i've never taken the timing chain off of an OHC motor. i would assume it is the sme as an OHV motor. but you know what they say about assumptions!! Guest kc6wfs Posted January 7, 2001 Share Posted January 7, 2001 Hi David. I use the rear stud for the exhaust and one of the foward bolt holes on the other side of the motor. As far as long term storage of a motor with the head off I would smeer on a small amout of graphite bearing grease to keep it from rusting. Good luck.. Accidents happen even to knowledgeable idividuals with very good intentions. PLEASE MAKE SAFETY YOUR #1 GOAL & IT ALWAYS HELPS TO HAVE SOMEONE W/YOU WHEN YOUR PULLING YOUR ENGINE WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN THRU THE PROCESS. Guest Anonymous Posted January 8, 2001 Share Posted January 8, 2001 I've used intake bolts in front and diagnaly in back to pull a SBC before. I've seen the carb bolts used with a flange built for it, but was always nervous about doing so, specially if your pulling the engine and trans at the same time and its a alum. intake. Guest Anonymous Posted January 8, 2001 Share Posted January 8, 2001 well, i pulled it today. i took everything off the motor that i could in order to reduce weight(and i'm rebuilding everything anyway so...). then i took the cylinder head off and prepared the block for removal. i waited for a friend of mine to show up to help guide the motor as it was lifted. i ended up using 2 head bolts to attach the hoist to. one bolt in the front, one bolt in the back. it came out with no problems at all. we bolted the motor to the engine stand and proceeded to tear the motor appart. well, it appears as though the tensioner spring somehow came off and it caused the timing to be severly thrown off. all of the pistons have depressions in them from the valves. but the good news is that the cylinder walls have ery, very little scuffing. bearings are in excelent shape, rings are in excelent shape, and the cylinder head looks to be untouched with only nor wear on the cam. so, unfourtunately this block will be going to a friend who wants to do a 3.1L in his 79 280ZX. and yes, i had pulled motors before, but mainly just FWD OHV V-6s. its a WHOLE lot easier pulling the Z's motor in comparison!! thanx for everyones input!
