Moridin
I was wondering if any of you had any experience with a BMW engine swap. Thanks
Drax240z
Well I did a little research into it. I had planned to put either the 3.3L or 3.5L six into my 240z. First off, they are wonderful engines. Superior to the L series due to the crossflow heads, as well as having a lower center of gravity because of the greater "slant" on the engine. The problems with the 3-3.5L (the big 6) are that the sump is in the wrong place. I did all the measurements for the swap, and the tranny lines up well with the stock shifter hole, engines are about the same dimentions, etc. But the sump would be right over top of the front crossmember in the datsun. Which forces you to either mount the engine high, or figure out some way to move the sump. I am not sure about the little 6's (2.0-2.8l) I don't know where their sumps are. But you really aren't gaining much over the L series 2.8 here. If you are planning on the swap, try to get that 3.5L in there! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Guest pauli
man... if it could be made to work, that would be one very smooth z!
Moridin
Someone on another forum suggested using a dry sump. Would it work and how much would that run?
KAZU
Hi, All. I am new on this forum. I recently bought a 240z here in NYC, and have a '87 BMW 325iX race car, with euro high compression pistons, in JAPAN. I also be thinking about the swap. BMW inline 6s are great at high RPM and my iX is faster than my 240z with L28 dual Weber, inspite of the additional 400lb. Among the BMW small-six (M20), only iX (AWD) and Z1 engine whould suit on the 240z front member, because they have rear-sump oilpan. Newer twincam engines also have rear-sump oilpan. So you can put an expensive E46-M3's S54 engine (around 320ps?) on your z. I think S54 is the second best normal aspiration inline 6 in the world. (Best engine would be TVR's steel-block engine.) Good news for DATSUN guys is that the modified L3.1s in Japan make more HP than stock S54.
