E49 265 Hemi straight six ???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Not sure if you guys in the US got his engine, but in Australia we used to have a car called the Valiant E49 Charger. This cars engine was a straight six, hemi designed engine of the 60`s-70`s muscle era. It boasted 300HP standard and to this day is still the fastest production car Australia has ever seen.

I am becoming interested in maybe putting one of these things in a Z...anyone have ideas/thoughts/opinions ??

Cheers !!

Well, having not seen it ever, I can't say for sure, but it sounds like a straight forward engine swap. Look at the pan to see if the sump will have a problem clearing the datsun crossmember, look at the height and size of the transmission going behind it. On most 6's it probably won't be much of a problem, look at overall length too make sure it's not longer than the original Z engine. If all that checks out, its really just a matter of lowering it in positioning it where you want it and then fabricating mounts probably from the stock datsun crossmember. The back can probably use a modified datsun crossmember depending on the transmission. Then its just a matter of hooking up the ancillary bits and having the driveline bogged to mate the datsun driveline to the back of whatever transmission it uses. 300 hp sounds pretty darn good and will move it along smartly. You may want to look at weight as well, and make sure it doesn't weight a whole bunch more than the Datsun motor, that way you won't screw up the handling real badly.

Well, those are the basics as I see them, if your handy with tools and the above is all a go, heck go for it, might make a very interesting swap.

Good luck with whatever you decide to use,

Lone

It has been done...some time ago (years), so yes it is possible. The guy that used to own/run Scuderia Auto here in Melbourne had a 240Z fitted with a 265/6 pack. I only saw the car once, but it was pretty quick. I don't know any tech details, sorry.

Having said that, and after seeing all the trouble my brother-in-law had with gearboxes and clutches in his Charger, I reckon you'd be better off sticking with one of the tried and proven V8's or a Nissan turbo engine...just IMHO, of course icon_biggrin.gif

BTW, how do you plan on getting one of these engines in Tokyo icon_wink.gif

I am moving back to home-town Brisbane next year...which is when I am doing the conversion.

Say...do you have that guys contact number or e-mail ? I would like to have a talk to him regarding the swap...at least I know it has been done

Cheers

No sorry, don't have any contact info and Scuderia closed down quite some time back. Best bet would be to get in touch with some of the local clubs when you get back....someone's sure to know more about this, just a question of finding them.
