Guest JAMIE T
My daily driver is a '71 240z(XTREME Z is taking up the garage). The engine runs strong. It has the good SU's and a E31 head on the stock shortblock. I recently got an '83 280ZX 2+2 parts car. I read on the web that these have a desirable shortblock with flat-top pistons. What I am thinking is to put the e31 head on the '83 shortblock. Do I need to do anything special to do this or is it a basic head change? Are the valves large enough for the added displacement(what are the valve sizes anyway?)? I am going to run the SU's with some race-tuned horns and possibly plumb some NOS fogger nozzles under(hidden) the intake runners for added insurance. Would I add the 5spd and 3.90 R200 while I am at it? Jamie
GrayZee
Dude, you wanna run this on pump gas? I don't think you want to use a E31 head on a F54 block, you'll get too much compression (somewhere around 11:1) It'll bolt on no problem but you'd be better off with a E88 or a N47 head (that would give you 9.5 or 10) I'm not exactly sure on those figures but go to http://www.ideal-z.com/ and they have a download called Lengine. That will tell you all the specs of whatever combo you can dream up. If you do end up using a earlier head with the smaller valves then I'd pull all the valves from the 83 engine and have them put in the other head. (but you'll need new valve seats)
jeromio
Norm-the-12sec-dual-SU-dude is running, what 11.2:1 compression right now, on 93 octane? So, it's possible. Risky though. You'd definately wanna drop the dollars to have larger valves stuck in that head though. Or, you could sell it - people will pay alot for one of those e31s. They have this folklore-ish, highly desirable mythic quality to the I6 crowd.
