Guest Anonymous
Hey guys, I am picking up a 1978 chevy caprice estate wagon with a 350 engine for $50. The guy says it runs but couldn't find the keys when I was there. Its a peice of junk in his yard. He wanted 500 and I told him its junk so I talked him down to 50 for the engine actually the whole car. I will be going back there today and he said he will look for the keys. Is it a good deal and what hp and trans (auto) came in those cars? Tried to look it up in the search but no luck. All I know is the engine looks clean, I getting everything, and its a 350. I will rebuild the engine anyways before it goes into my 72 240Z. Thanks,
Guest Anonymous
Typical two BBL 350's were rated at 200 hp with the 4 BBL at 220 or there abouts. One young man installed a 100K mile 1976 350 in a 1978 280 and it ran 14.56 at 91 MPH on its first pass. Most of this vintage engines had dish pistons and 76 cc heads, so they would burn just about anything fed to them. A flat top will give you 9-1 and a 64 cc head will make it 10-1 or there abouts. Don't get too wild on cam with this much compression (above 224 at .050) and you will have a very decent running engine.
