Trevor
Happy new year friends! I need a little brainstorm assistance any ideas are welcome. Have been tinkering with a 2002 Mercury Cougar with a 2.5L V6 and automatic. 120K miles. Same driveline as a Ford Contour, Mondeo, Probe, Mazda 626. 2 weeks ago It was running fine when stopped for about 10 minutes at the store. Went to start it and the starter just makes a clicking sound. Towed it home. battery is fully charged = 12.4V so, we figured it was the started and/or bendix. Bolted on a new (reman) starter and cleaned every battery cable and ground connection. still just clicks. Visually noted: The car rolls free in neutral. Externally the engine pullies rotate about 2-4 degrees as soon as the starter is engaged. Pulled out all 6 spark plugs and try to rotate engine by the crankshaft with a socket and 18" breaker bar, will not turn by hand from the front. Tried to turn the flexplate gear by hand through the starter hole in the bellhousing, will not turn by hand from the back. Pulled the valve covers off to see if a timing chain is broken, everything looks fine and tight in there. next thing I'll slip the serpentine belt off and check if the AC compressor is stuck, since the defrost was on when it was last driven. Wondering if the torque converter might be locked "ON"? Any ideas welcome.
