Hey everyone, I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I eventually want to do the sbc thing with my zx, but for now I want to see what it's like as is. I just bought the car on the extreme cheap, but I got no spark. The problem is not in the distibutor, and I checked for spark right out of the coil, and there is nothing there either. Any tips on where to check next? I have never had one of these cars before, so I don't know what they have for electronics.

i my self feel that the coil in the z from 70 to 83 was a joke

that would be one of the frist things i looked at.

look and see (boy this might start some stuff) what the ground cabel looks like. if it looks bad replact it if it looks replaced. look at the grounds body and motor

next pull the cap, pull the rotor, and look for end play in the drive shaft of the dis

most of the time i see a Zx with no spark its that the dis has end play and the black box on the side has over heated or the coil just died mind you thats like 9 out of 10 times its 1 of the two and all most all the time the ground is shot

good luck

I have been repairing other peoples Datsuns for over 16 years and rarely was the coil itself the cause for no spark. The first thing I would do is use a test light to see if you have power to the coil.If no power check the fuseable links.

Oh man. In these old cars the fusible links do tend to take a **** . They are evil, evil evil!:mad::mad: and you should check them FIRST in any sort of electrical problem. That is my rant. Anyway they are located on the passenger side of your engine compartment, at least for 70-78 Z's They are a little group of 2 boxes which have two wires that each connect two points in each box. Look for an obviously broken wire and check for connectivity- sometimes a fusible link can appear fine and still be non conductive cry2.gif gawd it took me so long to track down that particular gremlin...

Two more things. One, do yourself a favor and get some sort of a manual, and two, i know you are new, but please try to post things where they belong. this post probably belonged in troubleshooting or miscellanious. But thats OK. :D
