Side Pipe Exhaust

Fast Frog: Here is some info that might get you an answer to your question. You can probably tell I've been thinking about the side exhaust idea for some time :-)

I've done some digging on several of the Cobra web sites: http://www.cobraforum.com/ http://www.cobracountry.com/ http://www.clubcobra.com/ http://www.cobrarestorers.com/

I'm guessing that since Cobras and side exhausts seem to go hand in hand, you'd be able to get some answers to your question. I think a lot of the Cobra replica companies make their own side exhausts.

I don't know the size, or whether they sell only the side exhaust (minus the Cobra!) but I've always liked the look of these "swirled" (for lack of a better word) pipes. http://vipercarparts.com/group/cobrette.html

Cobra Accessories sells side pipes at http://www.cobraaccessories.com/

(see page 9) but I don't know what size.

Continuing on the Cobra idea as a source of side exhaust info, I've gotten some fast, friendly answers from the Mile High Cobra Club at http://www.milehicobraclub.com/

The "Real KitCar Online" site

(http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2021/bgcobra.html) is from a guy in Ontario. He lists links to many of the Cobra kit builders, many of whom probably make their own side exhausts.

Heres another one that does Cobra style sidepipes:

http://www.stainlessworks.net/Mufflers.htm

Wear the pants with the deep pockets though, they're stainless sidepipes.

Only problem with using a cobra style is they converge into a four pipe collector in the fenderwell area, so its either some one into four collector to bolt to them, or better yet custom headers like the Cobra has coming through the inner fender (which might be a pretty tough go on the Z.). There are other pipes that look like that style that have three of the header pipes as dummies that just turn into the fender and look like they're hooked up. They'd look pretty sweet either way on a modded Z.

I'm not a Denver native either, but I grew up there and graduated from South Hi yrs ago. I was going to DU about the time you were moving into town. I might look you up in the future. My son and his wife live near the tech center and we have friends up and down the front range.

Catcha later!

If all other conditions were equal, would a longer glass pack be quieter than a shorter one? I've seen some that are 25" and 40". If all other conditions were equal, would a glasspack with a larger pipe diameter (3" versus 2") be quieter? I'm trying to get a handle on how side exhausts could be made quieter than the ones I've heard on Cobras. Thanks

Arif, The pecs look great on that side pipe z but as we know "the devel is in the details" and what I saw is a severe, or perhaps moderate, balance problem. Look closely at the engine photo, the big HEI distributor is several inches from the firewall. Much too much weight forward. The secret of v8z handling is to get that weight back with proper engine mounts. Otherwise the car looks really good.

That looks like a Johns cars or scarab position engined car. IMHO, the sidepipes are to short, they should fill most of the space on the rocker panel between the wheels, but thats a personel preference. Also I think I'd avoid the guy's painter. He painted the battery, shock towers, etc etc. I guess masking tape (or even vaseline) wasn't part of his price on the job. Oh well.
