Guest Anonymous
Hey guys, this is actually a question pertaining to my stock 79 280zx, not my hybrid project. The car runs pretty good, but has a really weak ignition system. We bought a Jacobs computer and coil, but have never been able to get it to run with it. Though it runs pretty good, If I push the car hard, then turn it off, it gets no spark, and it wont start again until it cools down. Now the thing is, I can push start it, and it works fine, so it seems like the starter is drawing so much power that the ignition system can't even fire. I tried a different coil, with no luck, I am thinking that it could possibly be the ignition module?? Also, on cold mornings, the car doesn't run good until it is warm, though it runs ok, it goes to 3200 rpm, and revs REALLY slowly, until 3500 rpm, then it is peppy again, though not as good as when it is warm. so it runs decently, except from 3200-3500 rpm when it is cold, and smokes what looks morelike white smoke than blue or black in that range, then runs good through the whole range when it is warm... Any ideas? Thanks guys... This is really starting to get to me... Kris
Guest scca
my guess would be the Module. this is pretty common on many cars with the module in the distributor. when it gets hot it stops working. one day it wont start at all.... not as common with nissan but with chevy this is VERY common ...... assuming the coil itself has the proper resistance. are you using the stock ZX pickup coil with the jacobs? if so change out to a early dist with no module in it. Guest Anonymous
Thanks mike, I kinda though that was what it was... Could you give me any more information on this? Or anyone else really. You mean the stuck magnetic induction pickup coil inside the distributor, correct? Yes, I have the stock distributor setup with the jacobs coil, though I'm not running the Jacobs computer as I have not been able to get it running, It has a wierd setup to use the stock coil as a trigger, so that the tach works, I tried seting it up this way, with no luck, so right now I am using the jacobs tourquer coil, in place of the original. Could this be part of the problem? Thanks, Kris
Guest Anonymous
I had a Mazda with a pickup coil / 'module' in the distributor. It had similar symptoms and replacing the pickup coil / 'module' fixed it.
