GrayZee Posted January 14, 2002 Share Posted January 14, 2002 I wouldn't use the stock pump (it'll blow the float right off of the needle and seat!) There is nothing wrong with using a mechanical pump on a carbureted engine, unless of course your engine and carb require way more fuel supply than a stock mechanical pump can handle? When I was younger I found that people had negative thoughts about having electronic gismo's in their car now it seems that the attitude is that is it ain't electric, it's no good! NOT SO! Again if you are talking about a moderate cfm carb then do yourself a favor and buy are brand new mechanical fuel pump for maybe $20? bolt it in, with no wiring or relays to worry about and never have to give it a second thought. Guest Anonymous Posted January 15, 2002 Share Posted January 15, 2002 The JTR conversion v-8 manual says you cannot get a mechanical fuel pump in its location place to a small block Chevrolet due to the interference with the set back motor mounts.I made my own mounts and would need the help of Harry Houdini to get the original mechanical pump in there,but I understand from other posts that an electric fuel pump from a Ford van with a 300 CI 6 clylinder is an excellant candidate. There should be a few of these in the junk yards cheap. I f you know of a small mechanical pump that woud fit Let me know since I am not a fan of electrical devices on a mechanical vehicle. I hate em, and the reliability of electronic is great. Of course, If I had points, I wouldn't have HORRIBLE reliability due to a $214 ignition module needing replacing! I'm just givin' you a hard time Though you do have to admit, points don't have many advantages over elect. I mean, electronic is more reliable, no real servicing unless it wears out, just replacing it, no adjusting, many less small moving parts, and they are better for many more RPMS But you still have to love having things work in a way you can SEE to diagnose, not trust another electronic device (multimeter) to tell you what's wrong!
