Guest Anonymous
hey, I have a 1983 nissan 280zx n.a. and whenever I run the car for about 30-45 minutes... then I turn it off and start it up after about 5-10 minutes the rpm's start jumping around. Also, if i just drive it for longer than 45 minutes the rpms will start to jump around. If i run it for too long like this it just shuts down... any ideas? Guest Anonymous
Justin, I have many problems like this on my car, and just recently got them solved. It sounds to me like something is overheating. Probably either the IC Module, or the Coil. Considering that it is a ZX, it's probably the module. You gotta love those nissan engineers for bolting the module to the heatconducting aluminum dist. housing, which is connected to the block, then putting it under the upper radiator hose... My problems were these, after running the car for a while, it wouldn't start with the key, but would start right up push starting it. One day it gave out almost completely (luckily about a half mile from my house, it ran the next day to get it home.) I finally determined that with the very weak module, when it got hot and the resistance went up, it needed a full 12 volts to put out signal, and when cranking the 9.5 or so wouldn't cut it. I ended up installing an electronic distributor from a '76 or '77 (can't remember which, it's the single pickup unit) and using a Flamethrower GM HEI module mounted next to the coil. Here's another caution, at the same time I replaced my coil, with a matching flamethrower coil (my dad bough a bunch of flamethrower stuff cheap on ebay ) and when I tried to mount it in the bracket for the stock coil, it was too small, the bracket wouldn't compress small enough. Being so innovative, I took a peice of old radiator hose, sliced it, and used it as a spacer you could call it, more like a bushing though. My car promptly had ignition problems when hot again, apparently the insulation from the rubber caused it to get too hot... it was HOT to the touch. I took that rubber out, and it went away.... Sorry, rambling. Anyway, I would run through the tests in the FSM. If it says everything is fine and to replace the ignition module, I'd get one from the local JY to test it, as they are usually about $20 there, and over $200 at a parts store. If that fixes it, you could then stick with the JY module, get a new stock unit, or go hybrid (I'd be happy to help with any instructions and pictures for you.) Hope this helps somewhat, Kris
