Guest Anonymous
Theres an 85 gn motor in the paper locally which says it comes with the trans, harness, computer..easy swap. Is there anything else that should be there? Also is an 85 motor any good or should I wait and try and find an 86,87? Any sites of gn swaps out there? p.s. I just put dynamat throughout on my car and the stuff is awsome, it totally reduced the road noise which is part of owning a z. You can usually get it dirt cheap($24.00) a roll at www.ubid.com under mobile audio accessories. it normally retails for a lot more than that. I used two door kits and one trunk kit. Scottie-GNZ
My advice is to wait for an 86-87. The longblock is basically the same but Buick made major advancements in the engine management in 86 and the tuning potential is incredible. You may be able to get a pre-86 for less but once you start tuning it for more power (and you will), thats when you see the difference. The 86-87 engine was rated at 247hp and was grossly under-tuned. One of the "Performance Recipes" to get to 300hp has a total cost of $900 which includes good tires, free-flowing exhaust, boost guage, and trans cooler, all items you should do as part of the swap. $75 was spent on air bags, n/a to the Z. The rest of that major investment was spent on, GET THIS, 160* thermostat, modify wastegate rod to adjust boost, K&N filter and a chip upgrade. This is on pump gas and 16# boost. Race gas, race chip, 20+# boost and diligent tuning and you can be rewarded with another 75-90hp for about $250 for a tuning aid with datalogger and $50 for the chip. Makes you feel guilty sometimes No swap kits available, but lots of free advice. ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z http://www.mindspring.com/~vscott911/gnz.html
BLKMGK
DOH! Thanks for the tip on the DynaMat, wish I'd seen it earlier! I used a trunk kit to do my entire car but did NOT cover everything - you actually don't have to. Raod noise is indeed reduced quite a bit - I love it! I have 15 square feet of it... ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
BLKMGK
Let's see... Rear quarters got big squares and some spray stuff, rear floor covered as much as a I could with the fuel cell cover in there, some big squares on the rear towers, some squares on the underside of the cargo lids, some big squares behind and under the seats, a bunch on the tunnel, and th esuper stuff in the floorboards up front. I also put down some aluminum covered bubble wrap up front and on the tunnel. This all made a BIG difference in sound!
