Guest Anonymous
does the 280Z and the 280ZX Turbo share the same exhaust manifold bolt pattern? i'm about to start building up a 280Z, but would like to turbo it. if the bolt pattern is differant, will a 280ZX Turbo head bolt on to a 280Z motor without any adverse compression or milling problems? i'm not new to turbo motors, but i'm somewhat new to Z cars. thanx... Drax240z
Hi David. Yes you can swap manifolds without a problem. If you want some turbo info, I wrote up a tech artcile: http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html Click on Turbo buildup on the left hand side. Generally I'd say that you'd want to build an engine with either turbo or naturally aspirated in mind from the beginning. There are a few subtle differences, one being compression. Depending on your pistons, you may be able to get by ok with swapping the head. But the 81-83 turbo engines have a different piston design and block design from the rest... parts still interchange, but the block has more webbing for rigidity, and the ring lands on the pistons are lower down to help protect them from breakage, etc. If you plan on turboing it, I'd suggest picking up a 280zx trubo engine from the start. It will just make life easier for you. Lots and lots of room for improvement on that engine too. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
Guest Anonymous
well, right now i'm debating on what to do. on Sunday i'm buying a 78' 280Z as a parts car. it doesn't have a tranny and the frame is bent up in many loctions, but it has race suspension, upgraded brakes, race prepped head, and a full length header. i'm going to try to find a 280Z that has a good tranny and frame to put these parts on. i've just always wanted to play with a turbo myself instead of my friends always havin the fun! one friend has a 91 300ZX TT, another has a 91 Cavalier Turbo (completely custom job), another has a Grand National, and one has a mid 80's BMW thats factory turboed. IF i were to try to turbo the NA motor, then about whatre its limitations? i'm only lookin for about 300hp tops. but now that i think about it, i have found a 280ZX Turbo in a pick and pull yard! i just wonder what they would charge me for the complete motor? i know this is long, but i have one more question. what manufacture makes the factory turbo? i heard somewhere that a T-3/T-4 hybrid would bolt right up, so i would assume its Turboneatics? if thats the case, i wonder if a turbo from a Ford 2.3L turbo would work ok? its a T-3 and its designed for a smaller motor so spool up should be pretty quick and they are god up to just over 300hp. i've done a TBI to MPFI swap on one of my cars at one time for only $150 and i'm curious as to what i can do to the 2.8L without spending a fortune! Drax240z
The stock 280zx turbos were garret aireasearch T3's. Yes, a T3/T4 hybrid will bolt right up and its been done a lot. Excellent turbo for that engine. The T3 on the L28 turbo should be good for almost 300rwhp. You could always setup the car with the performance stuff you get off the parts car, and get the turbo motor, and build it up over the next "while". At least then you'd still be able to drive the car, and you could plan on swapping in the turbo motor when it was done. Which mid 80's BMW does he have? I can't think of any that have turbos, but it wouldn't surprise me. (was there a 745ti there somewhere?) ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
Guest Anonymous
that sounds like a good idea. i'm going in with a friend of mine to build up a Z car. he owns a 79 280ZX, so we might just build it up with a turbo motor. i just got off the phone with the current owner of the 78 280Z and i am buying it on Sunday!! after a little bargaining i'm only paying $450 for it!! and i've got a friend of mine who's dad ownes a 77 280Z that he is selling for $600. so maybe i can sell the extra motor, or use it for core charges and find a Turbo motor to build up! i can't wait to get the cars so i can start workin on gettin them goin!! and my firends BMW was imported from Europe. if i remember right, its a 745 something. i don't remember exactly. i just want a turbo car that will evntually keep up with my friends 300 ZXTT and my other friends turbo Cavalier!! btw, nice website and thanx for the info! Drax240z
Ah, imported from europe. 745ti euro model. Pretty freaking fast cars from what I've heard, though I've never seen one. (but doesn't a 4.5L turbo V8 sound like it has lots of potential?) I wish I could work on my Z... snow all over the place out there. Yuk. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
Guest Anonymous
we had freezing rain and ice this week so i know what you mean. i spent 3 hours the other day freezing my butt off in a 1 car garage while i installed a tranny cooler on my truck. had to make a custom mount for it so thats why it took so long. i have to find an industrial heater so i can work on my Z next week. i hate the cold!
