twice pipes on a turbo

Recommended Posts

Well i did it and was wondering if it would be too restrictive. It seems to run fine but i've never owned a turbo car before. It's y'ed off from the down pipe to the twice pipes sounds great at low rpm and at high it sounds really quiet.I was just wondering if the pipes on them are big enough and if i'm going to affect the performance with the two pipes?

The area of a circle is equal to Pi*radius^2.

For this lesson we'll ignore the surface friction on the pipe walls. icon_smile.gif

Basically having 2 2" pipes, are going to yield 2*3.1415*(1)^2 or 6.283in^2 cross sectional area. Having 1 2.5" pipe will yield 1*3.1415*(1.25)^2 or 4.908in^2 cross sectional area.

Of course there is flow loss due to surface friction, and you will see more flow loss with 2 pipes than with 1. (it depends on circumference basically)

Well 'better' is a relative term. icon_smile.gif You'll be quieter with 2 pipes as opposed to 1 large one. As long as you plan on the slightly less flow you could run 2 pipes without a problem, just size accordingly. Also, it can be a heck of a lot easier to have good ground clearance when running 2 smaller diameter pipes as opposed to one large one.

Lots to think about, but at least you'll be able to make an educated decision yourself. icon_smile.gif

Well scottie...

Honestly dude, if you are losing horsepower. Who cares. I did a full 3" dp all the way back to a dynomax race magnum. The resonance in the car is ungodly.

If you like the sound, dont change it. My exhaust is loud enough where im almost irritated by it icon_sad.gif

Anyway, sounds like a winner to me! Just make sure your not chokin the motor THAT bad. What size pipes are in twice pipes?

Evan, did you use the round race magnum or the oval one? I imagine the oval muff would be quieter due to it's larger case size. When (if) I go to a 3" system I may just use the 3" Super Turbo since I don't want too much noise either. They flow pretty well and are quieter than the straight through type. My friend only gained .5 MPH and no ET going from the 3" Super Turbos to the straight through 3" Race Magnums on his mid 11 sec 4100 lb. Pontiac LeMans. How bad can they be?

drax i ment the turbo thing you've been into it far longer than i have and it's nice to hear from you and scottie gnz and all the others.Evan i think they are two inch. And it sounds great it has a great deep tone and as you speed up the engine it gets quieter it just sounds good and mean.I don't think it's choking the engine at all it seems to have alot of power but i don't have a good running z to compare it to either.I just love driving it we went for a ride to grand rapids here in MI to see bumble zee and meet him and hang out and it ran great oil pressure was about70 psi all the way there cruising about 80 all the way there it was nice to have power in 5th gear and not have to down shift to pass on the free way and if i did down shift hold on cuz it was like a rocket.I can't wait til i can run her at the drag way. icon_biggrin.gif

The muffler is NOT the oval shaped one. i may end up using an oval muffler sooner then later. Its pretty loud. Ill see how long i can stand it. Ideally, if there were space (of course not) I would place another race magnum right after the DP to dump some resonance. Works great with my n/a setup.

Dual 2" equates to roughly a 2.5" pipe if i remember correctly. That should be perfectly fine.

Scottie, i made a balls out run with my buddy to get a borg warner T5 from grand rapids. Drove there, turned around and drove straight home. A friggin duck flew into my windsheild at like 11pm! lol

yeah, I'm still looking for HSS 2x4 in galvanized aluminum cheap icon_smile.gif it'll clear easy and provide enough area

single 3" has 7.1" area

dual 2.5" has 9.8" area

and 2x4 has 8" area assuming those are actual dimensions which we know they'll vary

Yeah, the bullet race magnum muffler does pretty much nothing, as far a noise reduction goes. The oval race magnum is much, much quieter (although still pretty loud).
