Blew the exhaust gasket

Well rather than put in plugs on the intake where i took off the unused vacuum lines i juat capped them off with rubber caps.Well They have popped off about three times before and it causes the car to over boost(detonation) so it back fires some times and pops sounds horrible.Well i was doing a burnout for all you guys on video(sweet one at that)and it blew one of the caps off and it over boosted on the way back to my friend's house and it back fired and blew about a 1/2"wide section out of my exhaust gasket so it sounds like a rought V8 now with a manifold leak icon_smile.gif I'm was going to replace it anyway but now i have a reason to.For now i'm going ot put in a piece of gaslet to seal it til i can get it apart to replace the whole thing. In about a month or less the engine will be out so i'll do it then. When i get the video put on the web i'll let you guys know where it is.

Good idea guys i don't know why i didn't think of it icon_redface.gif I put in a piece of on old gasket for right now and used some heat resistant sealer for now.I'm taking the engine out soon anyway so it will be alot easier to change the gaskets when the engine is out.Plus i'm changing the intake anyway so it's no big deal.Oh tim i checked the compression and it was an even 100 across all the cylinders i need to change the oil again it's got about 2500 on it.But i thought it was ok.What do you think?

100 sounds a little low, but I'm not sure what the stock ZXT is supposed to come out at. This can be caused by quite a number of things, though.

More importantly, the fact that they all measured the same indicates that the pistons are most likely not broken (unless they are all broken exactly the same icon_wink.gif).

If you had a broken ring land, I would expect the compression to be much lower than that. Bottom line - Sounds like you are okay...

  • 3 weeks later...

The stock compression for the turbo motors are 143PSI max. FYI..

Scotty,

Check your compression carefully on all cylinders. I was like you having too much fun with my beat up 280zxt at the track and blew HEAD gasket on 1 cylinder. I thought it was the exhaust gasket. I replaced the exhaust gasket and then realized it was the head gasket so all that work was for nothing...

Good luck
