Guest zthang43
Ok, so this isn't a Z question, but while i've been working on my Z, I am driving a '87 Toyota 4x4 with the 22R turbo motor. Works great, yada yada, until a week or so ago I noticed that I was somehow getting water in the intake after shutting the engine down. On restart, the engine coughs and sputters for a few seconds, and makes a huge white cloud of steam (you can really smell the antifreeze). I've figured out that it is the turbo; it is leaking both water and oil into the intake. So far, there aren't any signs of water in the engine oil. My question is this: Obviously, I need to fix this soon, but in the meantime, will I damage anything by driving it? It seems to run great still, and boost is the same. Did the turbo just blow a seal, or did it burn up a bearing, or what? I would think that if it's a bearing, the turbo wouldn't spool up very well and power would suffer from lack of boost, but so far that isn't the case. Anybody who has ideas, please help. DavyZ
I used to own a turbo Volvo, but I am not an expert on turbos (yet). If the turbo is not getting oil or is getting oil and water mixed, then that is not good for the bearing. I frankly would not try to drive it until I found out the problem. TEC or Turbocity makes (or made) a neat kit for the Toyota trucks--reroutes a new oil line away from the exhaust, new downpipe (bigger is better and no kinks!), and possibly a bigger turbo. The report in Turbo magazine (from ages past, sorry) raved about the increased performance. As I remember it, the upgrade was only $699, but that was a long time ago. Hope you don't ruin the turbo if you run it! Davy
