I'm new to Chevy's! Is there more than one possible timeing location? I have a S.B. with

various parts[see red hot exhaust header by 240 Al]It runs best when the dampener mark is 90 degrees[crank] advanced of the timeing pointer on

the engine.Someone E-mailed me and said there were different dampeners but I lost their address.I didn't put it together.I'm just trying figure out what I have. Please give me a clue! 240 Al

Check where your timing mark is a TDC.

Rotate motor till #1 piston(drivers side) is all

the way up and intake valve/exhaust closed.

Look where your pionter is.

That more of less will be TDC.

If you have a smaller dampner the ratio will be off slightly.

Hope this helps.

Al, the more I think about it, I don't think it was me who emailed you about different dampeners--sorry to confuse you if I did.

Chevy did make different pointers in the SBC--some have pointers that are in the top central location of the timing cover, while the other location is off to one side. You have to have 'like with like' (like dampener with like timing pointer) in order to get a correct reading and make sense of the issue. Hopefully this clears things up a bit and does not confuse the issue more. Anyone else care to comment?
