Guest zthang43
Anyone have a turbo they want to get rid of from a 87 or 86 Toyota 22R Turbo? I just pulled out the one in my truck, and it is in pretty bad shape. About this much -> <- play in the shaft on either end; the impeller on the exhaust side has some holes burned in it, and the casting is cracked. Also, the casting around the wastegate valve seems like it's melted; the wastegate doesn't seat very well. Is that how the wastegate is supposed to be, or is that part messed up too. There is a gap big enough for your finger between the exhaust impeller and the wastegate valve seating area, so exhaust gas can always get past the impeller even if the wastegate is closed. Is that how it was made, or is a huge chunk of casting missing???
Guest zthang43
Sorry this isn't Z related, but I figured you guys might be able to help. I pulled the turbo completely apart today, and it is one messed up piece. On the exhaust side, the housing is cracked, and the part of the casting between the wastegate and turbine wheel is completely burned away. The wastegate seat is also eroded a bit. My question is this: does anyone know about welding on cast iron to fix something like this? I can't afford to spend $800 for another used turbo, so I was thinking about filling the crack and the burned out section with a mig welder. I'm a fairly decent welder, but I have heard somewhere that cast iron will crack if it is welded. I had to cut and weld the exhaust manifold for the 4.3 in my Z to make it fit, and it seems to be fine, but it doesn't get as hot as a turbo, of course. DavyZ
I just was going to suggest TEC that had a kit for these trucks solving all of the oiling issues (oil line is too close to exhaust pipe and get coked up bad), but I just read your second post saying you can't afford too much for a fix. have you tried talking to Majestic Turbochargers for a rebuilt one? Otherwise, it's junkyard search time Wish I could help you more... Davy
