Guest steven96
Legally if you just do it without all the smog equipment I think you can not do it till 2003. Im not sure I think if you follow all the rules with the smog equipment you can, but thats a major pain in the butt. Steven
Guest greimann
The rule is: You must install an engine that is the same year of the vehicle or newer. That includes all smog equipment. '73 and older vehicle s are exempt from inspection, but not from equipment laws (but how are they going to know what you have if they do not inspect?). Beginning January 1, 2003, any motor vehicle that is 30 or more model-years old is exempt from inspection. This is then a moving window if time. Building a high power car that is legal in CA is very possible because of the wealth of CARB certified aftermarket parts. I have a '79 with a 350hp Chevy that passes all inspections and tests. Your best bet is to go with an engine combination that is from your car's year and do it to conform to the laws, because black market certificates are pretty much non-existant. DavyZ
Use the search function in the forum to look up "smog laws" and you'll find links to the CA DMV regarding smog. The above information you have been given is correct about the present laws and changing ones in CA. If you have a good 260Z, keep it and do the swap in that...you only have 12 months to go. Guest greimann
The guy with the '74 will be exempt in 2004 - 24 months.
DavyZ
Gee, I guess that would be right. Hey, it can easily take 24 months to do a swap anyway...register the car as a "non-op" until the date... Also, many '74 cars were made in '73 for the '74 model year--however, I don't think this argument would hold water with DMV very well.
