Costs of a turbo set up

Hey everyone I am new to this z game. I will be buying my dad's 71 240z. From what he told me it has a hi performance engine in there. So here comes to my question. How much would a turbo set up cost me? My main thing is just having a car that I can take out to the races once in awhile. BTW I want to beat rx-7's and wrx's. Off the top of my head I know I would need a t3/t4 or t4 turbo, intercooler, and downpipe? Whatelse and what would be the cost? Thanks a lot. Hopefully my car if I get it running will be a screaming 240zT rockon.gif

Welcome to the boards Dontrell. You definitely came to the right place.

You said your pop has a high performance engine in the 240z already...that leads me to believe its a high compression L24 running on well tuned SU carbs, or maybe even triple mikunis or webers. Unfortunately thats the opposite direction you want to go for turbocharged power. You'll need to convert the car to fuel injection, that means an EFI fuel tank, pump, fuel lines, fuel rail, injectors, computer, and a few sensors out of an EFI car. For simplicities sake, most turbo 240's swap in a complete 280zx turbo setup. That's dollar for dollar your best bet, and will be a big chore but easier than trying to track down all these parts individually.

Your fuel tank will swap in from a 75 or 76 280z, the first 2 years of fuel injection. Don't forget the fuel tank, it HAS to have baffles in it or you'll go lean with a low tank of gas around turns and blow a piston. This isn't a hard swap.

The fuel pump must be from a 280zx TURBO or better (better meaning higher flow at higher psi). This is not negotiable, any other z fuel pump couldn't flow enough for 3lbs of boost, and you'll pop that piston real quick.

If you do find a donor 280zx turbo to buy, you'll be fine, when in doubt, swap it out. (ok that's pretty uneducated advice, but better safe than sorry is a good motto).

Intercooling and exhaust are pretty similar designs, and if you don't weld, its best left to someone else(a pro, not a neighbor with a welder). Tell them what you want, and they will probably be able to do it.

Any more questions? ask away, were here to help. Also try the search option at the top of the BB screen, in this forum swaps get discussed all the time. 2thumbs.gif
