Guest Anonymous
considering that i can not buy a V8 crate already built. i was wondering what you guys thought about building an engine piece-by-piece. and picking out what kind of parts and what level of performance i want. would that be a good idea or should i just save up to buy the V8? Guest Anonymous
Yes, that is a good idea. The only problem I see is changing your mind on parts that have been sitting around for six months. Example, I really don't want to run these heavy iron heads. I need aluminum. You can't return the iron heads so, you have to sell them and take a loss. Good luck, and please choose carefully. Guest Anonymous
Another idea is to buy a used engine and trans combo. You could get a later model fuel injection setup, or a good carb'd combo, either way you could possibly save $$$$$$. Ie: I got my used LT1 and 4L60E trans out of a '97 Trans Am with 40K miles on it and paid $1800.00. Most people would be hard pressed to build just an engine for that, especially if you don't already have some parts, ( block, heads, etc...) Just another idea.... DavyZ
Depending on what your budget is, you can purchase a short block (block+crank+pistons finished for you) and then add your choice of heads, intake, carb, etc, later on. Keep in mind that heads are relatively expensive and so is the short block. If you look for deals, sometimes you can buy used parts (be careful) or even a whole performance engine that someone just has to let go because of circumstances for very cheap.
