labrat
I have a quick question about the tranny crossmember sold by JTR. Will it fit on an 81ZX or is it just for the Z people like everything else? I am having no luck with the crossmember off the donor car i was going to use, and it looks like i may have to go this route. Any ideas from the ZX people? I know we're in the minority here, but i really like this car and would like to get it running. This is the only thing i really have left except a few ignition timing issues... Modern Motorsports Ltd
Bill, I'm not sure how well it fits. Mine is a custom U piece that goes up into my tunnel...I prefer the JTR style for ease of re and re for any servicing etc. I do HAVE a JTR mount at home I can measure up for you if that would help. And this is just cause I can't resist it... hehe
labrat
I would appreciate the measurements if it's not too much trouble, as compared to the car. I am concerned about the differences in the fraimrails under the car, the jtr crossmember looks like it would bolt to the edge of them on a ZX. thanks! Guest greimann
I'm running a T5 from a '92 Camaro. It was originally supposed to be tilted, but I have it mounted straight up, so the trans cross member is creatively fabricated from steel and rubber bushings. You are probably going to need to fab one up for your ride. OK, I'll use this just once -
labrat
I'm really needing some help here, guys. I need at least some starting dimensions to have a tranny crossmember fabbed at the machine shop. BTW, i'm running a TH350 tranny. any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance... Bill
DavyZ
Hey rat, Whay don't you just buy the MSA tranny mount? I think they have one that will fit a TH350 in a ZX...Have you looked into it? It might be worth a look. Davy
Guest Anonymous
I mocked my tranny mount up with cardboard, masking tape, and scissors. With jacks and or blocks of wood positiom everything where you want it and design away with cardboard kind of oragami style. Then keep refining in cardboard (cheap) and then in metal. Modern Motorsports Ltd
"I'm really needing some help here, guys. I need at least some starting dimensions ....." Sorry I missed your posting Bill, if anyone ever has to have a response from someone you can always drop them a personal email via the icon beside our name when we post. (there are very few that catch all forum postings and I suspect a few of them have the 3k award) Drop me a line on email and I'll measure it up later this week. Guest Anonymous
1st position the motor and trans with jacks or what ever. Lie under the vehicle with a tape measure, if you must have measurements. Sometimes everyone can make voodoo out of something simple. I swear the cardboard and tape works like a champ. I mocked-up the entire back half of my pro-street Malibu with cardboard and tape. I spent about three days playing "paper dolls" I made frame rails, cross members, body mounts literaly everything. Boy did I ever go through the cardboard and tape but in the end it was perfect in paper. I then took it apart and duplicated it in 2x4 rectangular tubing and 2x2 tubing. I spot welded it all up on the shop floor constantly checking squareness diagonaly and installed it under the car for a trial fit, it fit so I pulled it out and welded it up for real. I reinstalled it and welded it to my existing forward frame rails, bolted the body down and I was good to go. Really and truely it isn't rocket science like the guys who do this stuff for a living would like us to believe. However you had better know how to weld.
