Guest Anonymous
Hey everyone, question, has anyone ever switched steering systems out of the zx's? I have the rack-n-pinion, and well, it gets in the way of every exhaust. SO, i was gonna see about putting the non-rack-n-pinion in my 82 zx. That way I could make a much freeer flowing exhaust. Just too conjested, and I want to get more flowage, since I'm looking into supercharging my engine. Thanks everyone. Sean
Guest Anonymous
According to what I've been told your vehicle being an '82 shouldn't have rack and pinion. I've been told the only "ZX" that had rack and pinion was the 1983 model year. Guys please correct me if I'm wrong.
Guest super280z
i think that Mr. bowtie is correct on this one. the only zx cars i know of that had the rack were turbo cars. every other one should be box. i've had to convert mine to R&P because the Box get's in the way of the headers and will not fit anything other than a flipped manifold (i think) which you obviously dont want to run with a blower, or s-10 swap headers which i've only seen in 1-1/2" tube sizes. not to mention that if you have it mounted per the JTR setup, it will require diffrent mounts. im not too sure how you're exhaust is currently but how is it "cramped"? surely there's a better way to run it? Guest Anonymous
Mine was an 82zx turbo. It does have the rack style steering. The turn-buckle gets in the way of the headers, and creats the clearance issue. I can send pics if anyone would like them to clarify. I suppose the sanderson headers, might work, it would still be very close. sean
Modern Motorsports Ltd
Sean, do you have the power R&P or non power R&P? With my non power R&P it's the steering shaft from the firewall that interferes with header solutions. I bent my current drivers side outward to pass outside that shaft. I've been planning for months to get some new custom 1-3/4's shorties...hopefully I'll get on it soon as spring fever is striking! I can send you pics of my clearances if that would help. Guest Anonymous
yeah, i have the power version, and it is the steering shaft from the rack, to the connection on the engine side of the firewall that is giving me fits. sean
Guest greimann
Be aware that the steering box presents exhaust clearance problems too. The box ends up so close to the exhaust manifold, that headers are not really an option. Only the manifold with casting number #364747 fits really well. There is a picture of it at the link in my signature. If you want to keep your rack, consider setting up a custom drive shaft that employs another double u-joint and a support bearing. That MIGHT allow you to run the steering shaft straight and angle it over at the last length to get to the rack. Just a thought, I don't really know if it will work.
