Wheel/Tire Advice

Hey Folks,

New to the Boards and really enjoying all the great advice available.

I just got my '77 280Z with GTO body and Ford 302/5L on the road... took a while... and I'm wondering about the best tires to fit.

I've got a set of 14" McLean wire rims (not knock-offs), that currently have 245/60R14 tires with raised white "Big O" scrawled all over them -- clearly not in keeping with the vintage theme.

Any advice/recommendations on what to wrap on the wires?

Thanks,

Charles

do you know what the width of the rim is? I have 15x8 w/ 3.5in offset on the rear and I think the tires are like 275 profile and they are just barely big enough to fit and look decent. There is still some gap between the edge of the tire and the wheel well. I once fit on 10s and they fit really well, almost stuck too far out, but it depends on the look you are going for.

Currently I'm running about the same as you are running for the fronts. They sit in a little bit too. They don't look like they fit as well either. It seems like the curvature of the wheel wells align better with the 15s instead of the 14s.

But why don't you just slap on the wheels and see for yourself how it looks?

In this case I think the wheels are fine, and the 245's seem to fill up the wheel wells quite well. I'll try to shoot some pictures and post them online.

I'm wondering what experience folks have had with various tires -- I've found relatively few high performance rubber choices for the old 14 inchers. So far the best candidates, sticking with the 245/60X14 size, seem to be either the Michelin Pilot XGT H4 or the Dunlop GT Qualifier T. These are sort of in keeping with the European blackwall tradition.

There's also the BF Goodrich Radial TA, but that's more of an American muscle car look...

I guess I'm wondering if anyone's tried these or other tires on their V8 GTO conversions and has good/bad experience to share.

Thanks,

Charles
