Chaparral2f
What are you doing for headers? I hear a lot of people with older z's talking about exhaust clearance problems with the steering, is it the same in a z31?
Guest SteveR
Yeah, the exhaust is going to be tricky, but not anymore so than with the older Zcars, I believe. The real kicker is that when we set the full weight down on the car, the car still sits kinda high... Is it possible an SBC and T5 weigh LESS than the VG30 and 5-speed?! Heh, it's close anyways, maybe the springs just need to settle back down, it has been sitting with no engine for awhile.

Guest Darthmentos
We want to use a 86+ corvette block hugger style header. This looks like it will be short enough to be creative with the actual flange/pipe. We are going to try to route the exaust on the outside of the steering shaft. Right now the huge booger on the end of my finger is that the clutch has to have 5" of throw.... It moves about 3/8" before hitting the floorpan (D'oh!) We're going to have to pull up the drivers floor pan carpet and make a groove in the floor to allow clutch movement. So far I am very pleased with our progress, SteveR will have to find a piece of nice 3/8" steel plate while I am on vacation next week to build the motor mounts out of. I plan to lay out all the pieces in cardboard, then transfer thos patterns to the steel and have it cut out. Oh and it costs $50 to get the transmission tab welded back on. Guest Darthmentos
STEVE!!!! I just had an epiphiny! My 84 Firebird with the blown engine is wearing a NEW set of hooker headers!!!!! Wonder if those will fit? If they do that's +100 that we just saved!!!!!
Chaparral2f
Some time back, I remember that there was a guy that did this swap, but I never could find his web sight. I do recall that he used a T5 and a hydraulic throw out bearing. that might save you cutting up the floor pan. (just a suggestion) Joe
Guest Darthmentos
Was it metioned what the throwaout was from? I know a lot of late 80's Jeeps had sealed slave/throwout designs.
Chaparral2f
I think it was an aftermarket unit. There was a site, I think it was http://www.bomgarden.com, but I could never get it to work. good luck
Dan Juday
Guys, here is that site http://www.pawinc.com/ And here is a gread thread that explains that throwout bearing and how to install it. It even has some great pics courtesy of Griemann. http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18219&start=

Guest Darthmentos
Egads! $650 for a throwout bearing? Steve you floor is getting notched.
Guest greimann
I think you mis-read something. The the bearing kit (includes the master) is $294.95. The adjuster screw is $39.95 and a hose from Grainger is about $22. About $357 total.
Guest Darthmentos
Still, clearancing the floor pan is free. I don't know, it'll have to be up to SteveR. After all it's his car, I'm just the wrench monkey and parts locator.
