GTO Onstallation: chop the whole rear off?

I was just thinking that the last few inches of the datsun rear sheet metal probably isn't needed for the installation of the GTO rear clip, so why not just cut off the last couple/few inches? Or at least just the area where the brake light are mounted, so you still have the hatch lock mechanism. It would save a good amount of weight, like about 50 lbs? Are there any structural problems with the removal?

If required, you could substitue a lightweight sheet of glass or plastic, which would still save weight over the original steel.

Just throwing in the idea. I'm sure some people can refine it.
