Need ideas for potential V-8 swap

As most you know, I have a Z31 300ZX (see sig). My engine is currently pulled and disassembled awaiting a rebuild with some better forged components from a Z32 300ZX TT. That way I can run higher boost, I'm shooting for about 20 PSI (intercooled) on Premium pump gas. Only thing holding me back from this plan right now is having to do a 5-speed manual swap. The consensus is the stock automatic barely handles stock power. That will really cost, and will make me need to save up even longer, which isn't a REAL problem, but this car is my only car (other than parents).

I came upon a sweet deal this last week for a 350 longblock, everything from the heads down, for $100. It is a sure thing that I AM gonna buy it, if not to just sit on for a while before I make up my mind about doing a swap.

I can't make up my mind about an intake. I have seen pics of a Z31 with a TPI and I almost creamed myself, it looks SO beautiful. But the only way I would use one is if I went through the same siamesing process my good buddy Sam (280Z28) did.

I have also been considering this: getting my current V-6 back to stock, reusing my current pistons/rods and just getting my heads repaired and slapping on a new turbo. That way, I'll have my car to get to and from school/work/wherever. Then save for a while and turn the 350 into a 383 stroker from the get-go. I like this idea a LOT, since my car is so much heavier than the earlier model Z-cars, I'll need more power to try and keep up with Sam. ( Sam's 280Z ) I know for a fact that A TPI would be HORRIBLE on a 383 stroker, since it only flows just enough for a 350 if it's extremely well ported.

The idea has been thrown around for using the intake from an LT1 or a Holley Stealth Ram. What do you fine people think I should use if I decide to go with this project. I'd like to hear all ideas, only stipulation is I want fuel injection, no carbs, please.

Also, I'd really like to go with a T-56, but would entertain ideas of an auto. What model are good and how much power can they handle and how much would they cost (prices for a T-56 would be nice, too)? I know I'll need a custom drive shaft, but I'll be hanging on to my nice R-200 rear end, they can handle power pretty well. Although, I might switch to one from a later model Z31 that has LSD.

Also, what do people think of this project in general? Should I go for it as is, turn it into a 383 stroker, just drop in the 350 as a 350, screw it and just sell the longblock, other?

I know this is gonna take a lot of custom work to do right, but I'm up for the challenge. I also want to do this myself (with friend's help) and not have to deal with paying a shop. I'm gonna have to cannabalize and rig a bunch of wiring to make my electronic stuff work. The stock digital dash should be fun...

Well, thanks for reading my novel, and I appreciate any insight that you can offer me, words of encouragement, a swift kick to the arse, whatever.

Thanks!!!!

Well... it all depends on how much you want to spend, and it go's back to the good old theory of fast == cash. :)

The thing about TPI on your older longblock is that the TPI manifold

is not a direct bolt on, as the distributor on the LS/LT1 is not in the

back anymore... so to use the LS1 equipment for EFI is going to take

serious mods on your part to get it to function. Not saying that it cant be done, and it can (http://www.lt1intake.com) but even when done it looks jeery... the distributor needs to be shimmed severly and it just doesnt look good imo.. (if I had the money I would prolly do it) but then again if I had the money I would just have it... ;) They (ls1intake) can do it for you or help you with diagrams to redrill the newer injection manifold for a rear mount distrib, and it takes some other trick mods as well. But it is doable.

Or you can use the Holly/Edlebrock TBI hybrid kits out their... As far as T56 tranny, just do a search here in the forums... Im an automatic guy (by original design) for now, but in the future if cash permits I may do the T56 thing myself.

If you got $900, you outta just keep your eyes open for an LT1/T56 camero pull on ebay, I see them from month to month for decent prices, then you could just drop it right in... (food for thought)

Ive got a stout older 350, carbbed with a TH350 automatic w/ 3.90 rear.. and ill tell you its a mean bitch ;) and cost me $1500 total.

thats my point exactly... there is a massive difference in a LT1 and a std 350 crate, the entire distribution system is different... as I was saying, u cant just put fuel injection on your 350.. its not that easy, the LT1 is a computerized motor and the injectors are controlled by computer, I mean you can go with something like this....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2406826894&category=33740

OR you can re-drill the LT1 intake so you can stab a distributor into it, that would require a spendy DFI fuel computer or a full camaro ECU/wiring harness pullout.

I mean, what kind of budget do you have? What are your expectations? If your budgetted you should run a carb imo, big old holly or demon..this is what "I" am doing, and this is what you should consider if your wanting to make BIG power on a budget...(i.e. 350 motor you dont have 9k in race mods in) ;)

keep stock 350 internals (how solid is this block, has it been rebuilt in the last 100k miles?) add a cam lobey of your flavor..id call them for specifics, tell them you want 350+ hp out of your stock 350 longblock (is it a 4 or 2 bolt block btw) and are goin to be running nitrous 100 shot (carb block kit) and see what they say.

the nitrous carb kits are cheap... $300 on ebay including bottle!

Im willing to bet 350+ - 390 hp on the bottle would be able to hand your buddy his ass ;)

also, what rear end gearing are you running in yours? Its a ZX right?

these are just my oppions, :D
