Guest woodyhooten
Will I be able to get a spacer for an EGR if I buy a Weiand intake w/out EGR provision? I know Edelbrock has a spacer for an EGR, but I want to run a Holley carb. Please let me know, I need to have the EGR a I have a 78 280Z. Thanks. Guest greimann
The manifold itself must be designed for EGR. Edelbrock #3701 is an EGR manifold that has internal passages cast in to provide this functionality. You can't add a spacer to a regular manifold to get EGR capability. Guest woodyhooten
Does anyone know of a way that an EGR can be adapted? The reason I ask is that I can get a Holley intake manifold and carb for very little at the local Kragen (Holley Street Avenger Carb and Weiand 8004 intake). I would like to know of any techniques anyone knows about, if any. My other option is to sell the '78 280Z I have now and get an exempt car. Any advice would greatly help my wallet. Guest greimann
Even if you could figure some backyard solution (not likely), the smog inspector is going to look at the manifold and see that it is not on the approved list. When building a smog legal car in CA, you need to stick with parts that have an E.O. number, carburetor included.
Guest woodyhooten
I can't keep myself from sounding stupid by asking this, but I would like to know what an E.O. number? If I do end up getting some early, exempt Z to put my 350 into, will they check to see what kind of engine I have in it? I have '79 350 and I obviously would not wish to spend the money to start a new engine. I know you're supposed to have an engine that is the same year and newer and that you must have the smog controls from that year. If I get the exempt Z, even though I have a '79 engine in it, will I have to do the smog check? I hope the answer is yes, but still I would like to know. Thanks
Guest greimann
E.O. means Exectuive Order. It is the process in which an aftermarket parts manufacturer goes through to certify parts for use in CA. Manifolds, camshafts, carburetors, distributors, and any engine parts that are legal for use in CA have one of these numbers and if you are trying to certify a smog legal swap, the smog referee will need to see the paperwork that came with the components to prove they are legal. Most items in Summit and Jegs have a notation if they are legal for use in CA. It would be good advice to read up on this from official sources such as the CA web sites. Don't rely on what others have told you, including me! Here are some sources: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/aftermkt.htm http://165.235.17.9/StdPage.asp?Body=/Geninfo/Publications/Engine_Change_Guidelines-Jan_1994.htm&LB=NO If you were to do a swap on an a vehicle that is exempt from inspection (1974 or earlier), You are still technically required to comply with smog laws for the year of the engine, but if they don't inspect, then how do they know? That is the risk that most are willing to take. For smog legal swaps, you must install an engine that is equal to the year of the car or newer. You can install a 1998 engine into a 1978 car, but not the reverse. Once you put an newer engine in a older car, you then have to comply with the smog regulations of the year of the engine. Guest woodyhooten
Thanks for the info on smog stuff. What smog legal intake and carb would you recommend for the engine? Also, does anyone have a smog exempt Z that they are willing to trade for a 78 280Z or let go for cheap? Thanks for the help. Woody
Guest greimann
The Edelbrock #3701 manifold and a Holley #80451 carb would be legal.
