My new car, and a little help needed...

Well, I'm 19, and I went out and bought my brother in law's 1979 280ZX about a week ago, and went to pick it up Sunday. I got it home just fine on the interstate, but I've been having a little trouble with minor things around Auburn. First, the driver side door is fully closed, but the little bell still dings like it's open, if I pull on the door it goes off, but I can't drive and hold the door. Second, I am not the greatest at driving a stick, but this car is killing me. It has a brand new clutch and brakes, and a fairly new trans, so it's not the car, but myself. I just need some pointers on the first couple of gears. First is pretty easy to deal with, it just takes a little finesse (tight to press accelerator, and really sensitive clutch, so I wind up just revving the engine), the second thing is that is has a fast 1-2 shift. I have to almost immediatley go into seccond gear, but when I press the clutch in, shift, then let out to press the gas, I hear a loud boom from the rear. I know this isn't a good sound, but it's how I've always driven a stick, but the car doesn't want me driving it like that apparently. Is this common? Any ideas? Anyway, I'll keep people posted with the resto, and finally, how do I post my pics of the car? I have like ten... Thanks, and I hope y'all can help me out. I really love this car, and hope to do a lot with it... [/img]

Chuck;

At the top of your personal page is a box titled "Album", enter pic's there.

The ding is shut off via a plunger switch in the forward door jam. Open the door and push it in to see if it is working (it mainly does the courtesy lights). I bought my Z and promptly disassembled it, I only remember one switch like that being there (which is normal).

What are you calling a "sensitive" clutch exactly?

Tight to press accellerator means footroom?

What means "wind up revving the engine" in this case?

What is this "second gear thing and "fast 1st to 2nd shift? Are you sayin you have to speed shift to get second? If so then your new clutch needs re-adjusting.

Fix this first and then get to the "Boom.

I won't say much about the boom but it might be that the rear trans. mount bolts are loose or even missing. Who did the work on this car? It dosen't sound good to me!

Thanks for your help with the door man. Seriously... I have the entire post about the tranny under the drivetrain section, I moved it there to get more help. So that should answer a lot of things. Thanks, and keep up the info.. This is really helping me out.

As far as that loud boom from the rear end when shifting, you might want to jack up the rear of the car and check to see it the front differential mount is shot. Look for the seperation of the rubber mount from the steel plate that its supposed to be fused to. Good luck

Ya, 240hybrid, you and me should get under there with a couple of beers and have a good laugh.....(if that's where the boom is coming from).
