Cracked header

Just pulled the Z out of my backyard today (had it parked for the winter). First thing I did was remove the rear bumper, mirrors, and spare tire. I think it looks really nice w/o the rear bumper and side mirrors. It's probably not legal, but neither is the tint. The back actually sits a little higher now. The spare tire was pretty damn heavy.

I charged up the battery and it fired up pretty quickly. It had been sitting in the snow for about three months. Anyway, after we started we noticed a loud clacking sound. It was actually an exhaust leak. Neither of the headers were on very tight. A couple bolts were only finger tight. When we were tightening them we noticed one was split vertically where the headers attach to the block. Does it need to be replaced? The sound almost completely went away when we tightened the headers. Will a new gasket take care of everything?

Also, does anyone know the stock height of a '71 240Z? I'm not sure if mine has stock suspension or not. It seems pretty low. The highest part of the roof is almost exactly 48" high.

Thanks,

I can't tell from your post description where the split is. You definitely will need new gaskets if you cranked it with the hedder bolts loose.

If the flange is split between the tubes vertically that's not a problem. Some times that modification is necessary.

If the split is where the tube leaves the flange or runs between, tube to tube now that is a problem. You will have to remove it and re-weld and maybe re-surface the cylinder head side of the flange.

When you do get it going be sure to tighted the flange bolts and run the motor for about 15 minutes and at great personal risk to your hands re-tighten the bolts while still hot and they shouldn't leak. Those high dollar gloves and sleeves will save your flesh. Or just be very, very careful.

Some good news. The crack appears to be ok. I think it was just modified to fit. But the bad news is I jacked it up and looked underneath and one of the tubes on the passenger side headers is dented. It's only about half width at that point. The exhaust hangs real low on my car, and often scrapes if I'm not really careful.

I got to take it out for a quick spin today, though. Did a couple burnouts. Man that felt realllllyyy good. Gotta wait until Monday to get insurance on it though.

Thanks for the help.
